The dolphin who found and raised Aquaman after his birth mother was forced to abandon him. She is an oddball in her own right as a heroic dolphin who keeps peace among the sea creatures not only through her pods strength but her own patience and diplomatic prowess. She realized "Swimmer" was going to have to leave her pod and told him to find his people, leading him to his biological father Tom Curry, but they reunite and she acts as an advisor on Aquaman's council. Aquaman "talking to fish" is an important part of his character but I find the individual animals he can communicate with are not given the same importance as his more human allies. I think this is a shame because they could easily bring as much or even more to his world and Porm as a council member is a great example. She has scars on her face from the time Demon Gate tortured her.

A lot like Murk. He’s a general who took pleasure in kicking Aquaman out of Atlantis, but realizes his mistake when he saves him in battle. He wore a mystic suit to protect himself from the sun when hunting Aquaman down and has a fanatical attitude towards his home. I see him as a more dangerous version of Murk. His loyalty is never to be questioned since it is for the Atlantean throne alone. And whoever may be sitting on it at the time. I repurposed a bit of Murk’s outfit and altered it to fit Rodunn’s comic looks. This is what I would use as the typical Atlantean Royal Guard armour, signifying that whoever is wearing this is a commander the Men of War must follow. I imagine what Tula and Ocean Master wear are more royal/high class noble versions of the same rank.

I mostly included him because he looks cool. I find it interesting when a villainous version of a hero fights someone who isn’t their heroic counterpart. Omar Pairut found the Sun Stone that the usual Sunburst uses to transform and used it himself so he could bring back the Persian Empire. I messed with his design a bit to try and bring in elements of Persian armour, but I’m unfamiliar with the culture so I’m not sure how I did. I imagine him like those guys who idolize Caesar and wish they could live in ancient Rome.

Topo is one of Aquaman’s most recurring animal partners. A giant octopus who acts as some extra muscle when Aquaman needs someone extra hands. Over time he’s gotten bigger. So big that now he’s a mutated kaiju which towers over Atlantis. He’s even bigger than Devil Fish He has trouble controlling his rage and can sometimes go out of control. An excellent ally to Aquaman who can handle mass evacuations, kaiju battles, wreck armies and scare the crap out of the Eel if he ever meets him.

Corona (or Kako) is an Inuit woman who met Aquaman when they where young. Living with her in their village was the first time in his life he truly felt he belonged somewhere. Most of the time he’s caught between worlds, but with her he felt wanted. Her brother finds them after spending a romantic night on the ice and attack Aquaman,s spreading lies about him to the other villagers and causing them to chase him away. Kako raised their son Koryak without Aquaman knowing until his adulthood, and soon after she was killed by Ocean Master (who in this continuity was her brother instead of Aquaman’s) then resurrected as a fire elemental by the goddess Gaea. Despite the Ocean Master stuff I think Kako works well rolled into the Parliament of Flames as their version of the Parliament of Waves Waterbearer, Aquaman. Her brother could just be a different character from Ocean Master.

The Liquidator was a space cop (and I think an android?) sent to capture an escaped criminal. The criminal caused a misunderstanding with Aquaman and they fought. I love this guy’s look and I think having a space cop who knows Aquaman could help flesh out the Annunake and Hunter/Gatherers a bit. I would love to see him in the Green Lantern Corps or an army of them decent on Earth because we got into conflict with their planet. Friend or foe he’s just a cool character.

King of the Lurkers, a deepsea race from farther into the depths than Atlantis. Their home’s given them bioluminescence and pale, sturdy skin tougher and more powerful than the average Atlantean. Starting on bad terms, Mera notices Noble’s true nature when he saves a child during a fight and they become allies. He’s a great ally to Aquaman and a great king to compare him. Aquaman often falls short of his peoples expectations but despite his appearance Noble is an ideal king for his people and highlights the faults in his friend. The Lurkers live in the darkness of the ocean floor and they’ve mutated into half fish creatures. Guess who I think should be behind their creation. They could easily be one of the many offshoot societies when branched from Atlantis, leading to them taking to the deeper water and becoming mutated by exposure to the Abyssal Dark ’s magic. They could be one of the groups holding the Zodiac Crystals from the Tuatha De Danann storyline.

Aqualad’s evil uncle who wanted his dad’s throne and tapped into dark magic (presumably from some kind of abyss) which turned him into this fish-person with dark necromantic powers. Aqualad was born with purple eyes as a sign that he had great magic potential. He could either become the greatest threat to his people or their saviour, and Slizzath is the other side of that coin. Atlan, first king of Atlantis and immortal sorcerer, trained Aqualad to become the prophesied Tempest and defeat his uncle. I believe this story is the focal point for the Abyssal Dark storyline. Atlan sealed the dark way which led to the sinking of Atlantis and now its malice seeps into the oceans shadows. Atlantis magicians tend to turn evil and usually end up deformed with fish traits and necromancy. The Tempest is Atlan’s greatest pupil and Slizzath is the Abyssal Dark’s attempt to kill the Atlanteans and set himself free. (This gets iffy with Atlan and the Dead King, but I’ll get there eventually)

Trok is nothing. He is worthless. Unless we’re talking about this Trok in which case we can a mid to long range fighter who uses his speed and acrobatic skill to dazzle his opponents while chopping them into bits. He’s the Mikey who dances around his enemies with a weapon that could easily backfire but doesn’t due to his sheer skill. Jokes aside, I’d love it if this character was the origin of the insult ”trok” from that Teen Titans episode. Having him be such a menace that name has become shorthand for a worthless thing that causes nothing but harm.

Just look at Slig. What am I supposed to say about Slig? He’s just a guy in a funny hat with the most superhero-esque costume out of the group. I imagine him as a grappler who takes pleasure in wearing his opponents down and killing them slowly. More a torturer than a combatant.

A former member of Black Manta’s Manta Men turned mayor of the sunken city, Sub Diego. Cal is an example of the change superheroes can make despite the need for crimes to continue happening for hero comics to have a point. While you can’t get rid of all crime you can help change a person’s outlook, give them time to pull themselves out of what ’s keeping them down, and help them maintain the changes they want to make in themselves. Cal was drawn to Black manta’s promises of a kingdom for the misused and unwanted. What he was given was just another attempt to enslave a people for the benefit of another. When he saw Manta for who he really was he turned away from his empty promises and would eventually fight for his ideals on the stage of politics. The Manta Men costume is a slightly altered version of Black Manta’s own with a different helmet. I imagine the breathing tubes are something they don’t need but Mantas included just incase he wanted to off a traitor.

A prisoner experimented on by the sorcerer Hagen who combined him with a jellyfish to make a super-soldier. He’s like a magic made version of Robocop. None know who he was before his abduction, and sprinting back to life after having been presumed dead and buried, he has no purpose in life but to uncover his past even if his new body prevents him from returning to it so he joins Aquaman’s court in defending Atlantis while searching for clues. A tragic character like this is a great addition to the AquaFamily and stands out among Aquaman’s already colourful cast. The real gravity to me is how unknown this character is. His look, backstory and abilities make him a great candidate for cameos in anything Aquaman is in. He’s the shadow to AM’s light and could easily fit in with characters like Noble.

Jaffar is the leader and a bare-fisted brawler. He’s not all brawn but he is an alien from a horrific wasteland of a planet, so human customs are not his thing. I imagine him similar to the IDW Sonic version of Zavok. Equal parts schemer and powerhouse who prefers the direct approach but is fully capable of using his head. I love the Deep Six and would like to see them used more, even outside of Aquaman. Each of these raided out Gill-Men is a massive threat due to their combat prowess and strength. They’re a specialized task-force with an array of skills spread among them. I think of them like a DND or Dragon Quest party. Each member has their own specialty and contributes to the groups overall success. The main drawback is their lack of knowledge about Earth and their total devotion to Darkseid, which can be taken advantage of. Since they can always be resurrected any writer could brutalize them however they want (like robotic Foot Ninja or the Ventriloquists dummy) and still be able to use them later on. When they show up they should always be a big roadblock, but they can be overcome.

These guys don’t seem to have much individuality so I’m going to speculate based on what I’ve seen. Pyron uses an up close weapon and rides on a hover board. I made him the shortest of the group and ave him a amore playfully sadistic personality. I imagine him as the Raph to the Deep Six’s Ninja Turtles. He likes getting into fights, showing off to his opponent and proving he’s better than them. Chalk it up to his Apocalypse upbringing giving him an inferiority complex.

Shaligo is the scout. He flies ahead and brings any information back to Jaffar. Despite not being too combat oriented he is durable and likes to use his weight to dive-bomb unsuspecting prey. He seems more cautious than the others and tends to perch himself high up like a gargoyle. I had some trouble with the Deep Six. Since they’re from Apocalypse I wanted to make them more desaturated to reflect the dingy, hopeless world they come from. It took me a while to land on a balance but I think I found it. Only their hate-filled red eye burn with full saturation.

Gole is the stealthy Rogue who creeps up behind a key target and slits their vitals with his sai. He moves silently despite his size and is always waiting for a kill, which he delights in. I imagine him as a super villain version of a slasher movie monster like Jason. He moves slowly but with purpose and strikes only when he knows he can taste a kill. Each Deep Six member has fins up both arms and one on their back. I don’t know if they’re from the same species or if Darkseid had them modified, but I felt it was important to keep that design cohesion between them since they are a unit.

Aquaman week 6 pt 1.

The aquatic elites of Apocalypse, the #DeepSix. Their only purpose is to cause mayhem and terrorize the masses in the name of Darkseid. Even if they die they'll just be resurrected to serve him again.
