Refusing to go dark.
Linen on cotton, stitched with vintage yarn, soft, worn, carrying time in every thread. A circle that holds its ground, a horizon that stays light.

A hand-woven wall-hanging (rug) with thick wool pile in a flame and smoke cloud motif. The shapes overlap and curl up from the bottom of the rug, and there's an arching amorphous curling shape over the top of the rug in dark blue. The colours of the rug are teal, grey, light blue, blue-ish black, purple, violet, and snippets of pale pink.

Details of five tape measure artworks made by textile artist, Deidre Robb. These textile art works feature hand embroidered repeating patterns. Measures of thirty are stitched in black thread followed by measures of five stitched in gold thread on cream linen fabric. My ‘Time well spent’ works were made for a group exhibition called Cultivating Slow Making (at Mundaring Arts Centre in Western Australia, curated by Annette Nykiel). I am interested in how we have collectively created a modern world that is at odds with what humans require to stay healthy, both physically and mentally. Looking after ourselves now often requires small and large acts of defiance or going against the accepted norm. I was fascinated to read about recent health research into the negative impacts of sitting for long periods of time. The study concluded that a pattern of five minutes walking after every 30 minutes of sitting was the most effective to mitigate against the negative effects of hours of sitting. I have worked in office settings for decades and have never ever been an employee where this practice would be deemed acceptable! But in my creative practice I have full control over how I structure my time and take care of myself. Throughout the making of these works I attempted to follow the 30/5 pattern of sitting vs exercise. My healthier routine sometimes felt disruptive, inconvenient and underproductive. Much has been written about the mental health benefits of slow, repetitive activities such as hand stitching. I know all about that and am pleased to read such research. These works are about me accepting and putting into action some research that was less comfortable to hear. These tape measures are not for measuring bodies. They record patterns in time because how we use our precious time affects our minds and our bodies.
