#CootClub I’ve now counted three greylag pairs and that’s super exciting. None last year, and not aware of any the year before. Mute swan pair also have returned.
Welcome back to #CootClub! Today, six tufties (four males), a greylag on the nest!, four coots being very territorial (I’m loving it!), various little grebes, mallard pair. Nesting greylag new for this year, very excited!
Geese! Greylaga on the lake. #CootClub
I’m a little ahead of plan, so I’m watching to moorhens on the lakes beside my hotel. Unexpected #CootClub
Today’s #CootClub update. Only two coots showing, but the tufty pair are still around. The mallards seem to have moved on for now. About half a dozen little grebes are fighting for territory. Speaking of battles, two great tits were battling it out. Also saw my first green woodpecker of the year!
Good morning and welcome to #CootClub 2026! Half a dozen on the lake today alongside four argumentative and giggling little grebes, and a thruple of mallards.
Four smart Brent geese swimming on a cold blue sea. They have black heads and backs and white underneath … they look a bit like what you might get if you crossed a mallard with a penguin
Not Coots, but did think that Tom and the Death and Glories would have enjoyed seeing these Brent geese today

You know what? Unless I’m very much mistaken, I reckon it won’t be long before there are chicks and #CootClub is in full swing once more. Three showing today, and a small flock of twenty three mallard. Also a little grebe. Heard a moorhen… things are waking up!
I’ve been out to the other reserve and seen two pairs of coots. #CootClub
It’s not often you’ll hear me mention the temperature unless over 20°, but it’s feeezing with wind chill today. Had my woolly hat on!
Only one coot visible today, three pairs of mallards seem to have thuggish taken over the lake. The odd little grebe still about, though. #CootClub
Parents and one (second brood) doing well. That chick is growing super fast! #CootClub
Two juvenile moorhens testing their mettle, too. #CootClub
One new Coot chick this evening! #CootClub
I love that Tiny’s parents are still a couple, groom each other, and bicker. It’s rather endearing. #CootClub
Tiny is looking very well. Solo is still screaming but not far behind Tiny in development. Throttle grebe chicks that has survived all seem to be going great guns. There are two moorhens on the lake, newcomers, and they appear to be building a nest! #CootClub
Good evening. Today, #CootClub is all about moorhens and little grebes.
Just been bathing in the joyous song of a couple of dozen tiny, new Long-Tailed Tits. They’re fearless and sit in the low branches just out of reach. Wonderful. #CootClub
Young mallard! That’s the first duck chick I’ve seen on the lake. Only about 1/3 grown but healthy! #CootClub
Tiny is adult! Its face plate isn’t full size yet, but glossy black and only knowing the birds on the lake means I can spot it! #CootClub
It’s raining on the lake 5 metres away but dry here… #CootClub
Just caught two coots mating on camera. #CootClub
First set of younger twins also doing well. I thought only Tiny was left for one minute. #CootClub
Tiny’s white frontal plate is slowly turning the right colour! Very exciting. #CootClub
Went to the lake earlier. No sign of any baby Little Grebes, which was sad. The young coots are all developing well. Saw a barn owl! #CootClub
Baby little grebes galore! Adorable. #CootClub
Mrs Tufted is one of those ‘and one more thing’ people in an argument. She’s not happy with the coots, seemingly unable to comprehend their sheer ferocity and psychopathy. #CootClub
My friends, I have completed birding. I just saw the Bittern in flight. And it’s calling again! #CootClub
Most stationary scenes! Very loud quacky roar from one side of the lake, and the coots have pinned the tufty pair against the shore! Quite a standoff. Tufties eventually gave way and found an uneasy path to the open water. BITTERN CALLING! #CootClub
On the field behind, lapwing are hueeeting for all they’re worth. Tufted duck pair now on the lake regularly, sadly both together so I doubt a brood on the way. #CootClub
Tiny seems to be doing well, as are the slightly smaller twins. All good news. #CootClub
