What declining vaccination rates mean for families in Allegheny County - where 1 in 3 kindergarten classrooms lack herd immunity for measles As the risk of measles remains an ongoing concern, herd immunity in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, is already slipping. According to data obtained via The Washington Post in January 2026, 1 in 3 Allegheny County kindergartners were in a classroom too far below adequate vaccination coverage to stop a measles outbreak during the 2023-24 school year. A professor from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Public Health, Kar-Hai Chu, and a research program supervisor, Maggie Slavin, answered our questions about declining measles, mumps and rubella vaccination rates and what it means for the future of public health. Private and parochial/religious schools in Allegheny County fall below the herd immunity threshold, while public schools tend not to. What explains that gap, and should it concern us? Research shows the disparity between vaccination coverage in private and parochial/religious versus public schools is that private and parochial/religious schools tend to have higher rates of exemptions to vaccinations for moral and religious beliefs. Local vaccination rates in Allegheny County schools are declining and are below the necessary level of vaccination coverage to stop the spread of measles: 95%. Between the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years, public schools displayed an overall decline in coverage, whereas private...

USDA Funds $2M Project to Test Novel Antiviral Fogging Technology Against Avian Influenza TALLAHASSEE, Fla., April 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A research team led by Purdue University, with partners Entomol and 1,4Group, has been awarded $2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to evaluate a novel antiviral fogging technology to combat high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) which remains a serious threat to poultry health and the global food supply. The project's lead investigator is Dr. Ekramy Sayedahmed, Assistant Professor of Poultry Medicine at Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine. His research focuses on avian influenza vaccines and molecular virology. "At Purdue University, our research team along with Entomol will develop a new therapeutic approach using hydrogenated catmint oil (HCO), a product of Entomol Products, LLC, to directly target and inhibit the virus in poultry environments. This innovative method has the potential to significantly reduce viral spread, offering farmers a practical solution to protect their flocks," said Dr. Ekramy Sayedahmed, Assistant Professor of Poultry Medicine at Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine. "Hydrogenated catmint oil is a natural compound that, when used strategically in poultry facilities, interferes with the virus's ability to propagate. Our research involves testing HCO's antiviral effects in the lab, assessing its...

Antiviral drugs and shingles vaccines tied to lower dementia risk New evidence suggests common viral infections may shape dementia risk, while vaccination and antiviral therapies could offer a surprising path toward prevention. Study: Do Herpesviruses Contribute to Dementia? Insights from Infection, Antiviral Treatment, and Vaccination. Image credit: Andrew Angelov/Shutterstock.com *Important notice: SSRN publishes preliminary scientific reports that are not peer-reviewed and, therefore, should not be regarded as conclusive, guide clinical practice/health-related behavior, or treated as established information. A recent study posted to the SSRN preprint server (not yet peer-reviewed) conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review to evaluate the associations among dementia risk, human herpesvirus infection, vaccination, and antiviral therapy. A systematic review and meta-analysis To identify relevant studies on human herpesvirus (HHVs) with dementia as an outcome, researchers conducted an extensive search of English-language papers in the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, and Embase, up to February 2026. Pooled random-effects models estimated the relative risks (RRs) for dementia associated with HHV infection, specifically varicella-zoster virus (VZV), herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1/2), and cytomegalovirus (CMV). The RRs also considered VZV vaccination and antiviral therapy. To be included, articles had to present case-control studies, cohort studies, or non-randomized controlled trials, and they had to include a clinically...

Contact tracing launched after mpox claims lives of 4 children in southern Pakistan Health authorities have launched contact tracing to contain the spread of mpox in southern Pakistan after it claimed the lives of four children, officials and local media reported on Sunday. The children died last month in Khairpur in the southern Sindh province in the first local outbreak of the zoonotic viral infection in the country, local English daily Dawn reported. In a statement, the Sindh health department confirmed that initial findings showed the children who died were affected by mpox. The virus made headlines last month after the deaths of seven newborns with chicken pox-like symptoms in two Khairpur hospitals, promoting health authorities to launch a clinical investigation. The investigation proved that four of the seven deceased were affected by mpox. However, a review by medical experts found that their deaths were not directly caused by mpox, the department said. "All the children who died were premature, too weak and had low birth weight. They were already suffering health complications caused by malnutrition,” it added. A health department official who wished to remain anonymous told Anadolu that around two dozen patients, mostly children with unusual skin lesions, have been reported in Khairpur and the adjoining Sukkur district. The health department...
