The use of the counselling notes of victims in court cases is cruel, inhumane and abusive - it is morally and ethically abhorrent, counter to every single tenet of therapeutic practice, and a final betrayal of an already profoundly traumatised person.

Therapeutic counselling space should be a place of safety, trust & healing -instead the system that seems to be entirely structured around protecting abusers reaches into that safety and destroys that too-leaving people who might speak out with nowhere to turn for support.

Counselling Notes Are Used To Undermine Victims - Hazel Behan A bill put forward by TD Ruth Coppinger aimed at banning the practice has started.

Hazel Behan spoke at an Oireachtas Committee hearing regarding a complete ban on defence access to complainant’s counselling/therapy notes in trials involving rape, sexual assault or gender-based violence.
