One of the more consequential European wars in between Napoleon & WWI, the #CrimeanWar grew on #ThisDayInHistory in 1854 when Britain & France joined on the #Ottoman side. In line with the #EasternQuestion, they backed the #Turkish empire as a bulwark against #Russian expansion.

While the Russians did make a determined effort to try and counter the British Flying Squadron in thr Sea of #Azov, with 50,000 soldiers deployed along the coast, the overall cost in lost animals, stores and buildings was immense #CrimeanWar
The Sea of #Azov campaign saw the birth of both the 19c gunboat and more inventive flating batteries. All of which were used to attack scores of coastal settlements #CrimeanWar
