I had an enquiry about a #VintageMap painting of
#CrowlandAbbey
on Saturday so I decided to try an initial sketch for it
With a history going back to the 9thC it came to its end during the dissolution of the monasteries of Henry VIII
Now to find a map!

Aerial view: Crowland Abbey, Lincs – founded 8th c. on site of St Guthlac’s hermitage. Once a great Benedictine monastery (dissolved 1539), its surviving nave and west front now serve as the parish church. #Aerial #Photography #CrowlandAbbey #Lincolnshire #NotFromADrone

A mason’s depiction of a ‘hairy’ or ‘curly’ star (right hand corner) from the ruined west wall of the south aisle of Crowland Abbey in Lincolnshire. The star is considered to be Halley’s Comet, and would have been visible in 1145. 📸 My own. #StoneworkSunday #CrowlandAbbey
