Okay so basically I have loved Crownfell since I laid eyes on it, and not just for the art -- I been in gaming since 2000, pretty faces no longer impress me much -- but because this is basically a chesslike that actually does the promise of marrying with Magic in a way done *right*, with every card having a special (and unique) power that makes a significant impact, even for weaker pieces.
(And as always for good chesslikes, a weak piece in the right situation is appropriately terrifying.)
Crownfell also impressively makes full use of being cards -- the flipping of color for ownership purposes, sure, but it's just nice to be able to put special powers and movement diagrams on the "pieces" themselves, enabling every unit to be more intricate than your average molded piece figurine.
And when the solo mode happened? Well, Crownfell is basically my perfect chesslike. Or indeed, my favorite abstract. Because good solo modes for abstracts are hard to come by -- and Crownfell's solo mode in the Last Stand expansion is easy to run, dynamic, and tough; all things that solo modes for abstracts can find so difficult to express.
I really recommend Crownfell ^-^ and I am ofc very pleased to have an abstract with wonderful table presence packed in so tidy and small a package.
