Joel Ponder came from a rich family, but he hasn’t spoken to them since he enlisted for the Gilded War. He is now middle class or so. He has little money, but his lodging is taken care of and he has a steady job as Marshall.

Joel Ponder has seen many tragedies in his life. I think his saddest moment may have been either witnessing the near annihilation of his platoon in the Gilded War or the death of his mentor and predecessor as Marshal of Strompton, Marshal Tanner.

Crudeia is absolutely a Gilded world, and was in fact highly inspired by an English class I took that focused on the US’s gilded age. There are pockets of tranquility, but the world is immediately post-war and ruled in large part by robber barons and oligarchs.

A mainline railroad runs from west to northeast, with a narrow gauge branch of rails, marked by tree stumps, running to the south and to the lumber mill. The lumber mill sits near a lake with several logs floating in it and a dock. A shantytown has formed north of the lumber mill, with some more established houses to the west of it. North of the houses is the local jail. A small market opens up west of the houses. On the other side of the narrow gauge track is a lone house. North of the market is the freight depot and across the tracks from the depot is the passenger station. A path leads north from the station to a nearby manor. West of the station is a barrel-shaped tavern near a copse of trees and a well. East of the station and up the tracks is the signal box. A small graveyard sits north of the lake, hidden from sight by some trees.
