Ctenophore- a very deep sea jelly type marine creature that literally lights up like a christmas tree. This one is all red. Others flash in different colored. We celebrate them on 10/04. Taken at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Close-up of two small ctenophore shaped beads, held in a hand. The beads are roughly egg-shaped, and translucent, with evenly spaced red stripes running vertically down their sides.
I made some ctenophore beads for #CtenophoreDay! They're a bit "over colored", because ctenophores are mostly just clear/translucent, and that's really hard to work with as an artist.
(They're about 1 inch (2.5cm) tall, with a 4mm hole through the center.)

Well I didn’t make it to 1004 but I did add 126 more to my total so that’t averaging a little over a cteno a day

Happy Ctenophore Day, everyone!
It’s been a long time since we’ve had a #CtenoTakeOver, something that started well before this space went public.
I want to hear about your fave cteno science 🧪 and see your cteno art 🐡🦑🐙
For #CtenophoreDay an experience so extraordinary & exquisite if I hadn't captured it on camera I'd have thought it was a dream. Last month, heading into the sunset at end of #MySwim at Shimoda, found myself in a vast raft of ?Mikado Comb Jellies (Bolinopsis mikado) #cilia #CtenoTakeover #Japan🧵1/6

4 photos of bioluminescent organisms that live deep under Monterey Bay, taken at the aquarium in 2023. They look like ghosts decorated with tiny fairy lights in different colors. This one is mostly purple.
2 ctenophores, one lit up in orange & pink, the other has red and green lights as well.

A triblend t-shirt with a rainbow printed cydippid ctenophore with tentacles all unfurled
Anyone else have a ctenophore shirt? I’m wearing my Pleurobrachia pileus shirt from Howling Bird Studio in MA. The tentacles extend out in a rainbow.
I haven’t gotten to see this species in person (yet) but everytime I wear this shirt nightlighting I find ctenos.

I think it’s time for another #CtenoTakeOver!
I want to see your ctenophore research, pics, vids, art, and puns.
Tell us about your favorite species or cteno fun fact.
Bonus points if you go out and find a ctenophore for me today because I’m flying to the Midwest.

No feather boa cydippids tonight, but found a Dryodora glandiformis!
I think the 🧪 feed is long overdue for another #CtenoTakeover … share your fave ctenophore science facts or pics you’ve taken.
