"If you remember in 2023, there were #cyclonemocha in the Western part of Myanmar in #Rakhine. But of course if we compare to the tragic #earthquake last month. It is quite too devastating."
200,000+ forced to flee after #TyphoonYagi, with #Myanmar junta "requesting" for int'l aid.
➡️Following #CycloneNargis & #CycloneMocha, Burmese military will weaponize humanitarian access. Int'l community must support CSOs, CBOs for direct aid delivery to civilians. www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/9/...
Today’s the last day of my birthday fundraiser and I would be so grateful if you could donate or share!

New 18Z IMD #CycloneMocha surge forecast: 3-3.5m (9.8-11.5'), 0.5m higher than previous forecast. High tide is at 11 UTC, low tide is at 5 UTC. IMD predicts landfall at 6 UTC, just after low tide, so that is fortunate. Tidal range is about 1 meter. Myanmar gets the worst surge.
At 11 a.m. EDT May 13, #CycloneMocha ranked as the 8th-strongest tropical cyclone on record in the Bay of Bengal (BOB), with 150 mph winds, according to JTWC. The only landfalling Cat 5 in the BOB: 1999 Odisha Cyclone. Satellite data for the full Indian Ocean goes back to 1998.
Latest IMD #CycloneMocha surge forecast is 2.5-3m, 0.5m higher than yesterday's, but is likely too low, considering the 12Z Saturday JTWC intensity estimate is 150 mph--just 10 mph below Cat 5. Even if Mocha weakens to a Cat 3 at landfall, its surge will likely be Cat 4-level.
