Microsoft takes over a Texas AI data centre expansion after OpenAI backs away Microsoft is taking over a data centre construction project in Texas after OpenAI declined to pursue it, in a move that will make the two companies neighbours at one of the nation’s largest complexes for running artificial intelligence. Data centre developer Crusoe said Friday it is working with Microsoft to build two new “AI factory” buildings and an on-site power plant in Abilene, Texas, right next to where Crusoe has been building an even larger computing campus for OpenAI and Oracle. OpenAI’s existing project, the flagship of a broader initiative called Stargate, is so massive that U.S. President Donald Trump was the first to officially announce it just after his inauguration last year to signal AI investments he called a “resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential.” Microsoft was once OpenAI’s exclusive cloud computing provider and still holds a roughly 27% stake in the ChatGPT maker, but the two companies are increasingly pursuing AI development separately, even though they are on the same tract of land. Crusoe has already completed two buildings for OpenAI and its other cloud partner, Oracle, supplying a surge of computing power that helps build and operate technology like ChatGPT. SoftBank was also an investment partner...

Quantum Communication Decisively Beats Classical Limits in Data Transfer Guangxu Yang and Jiapeng Zhang at University of Southern California have achieved the first exponential separation between quantum and randomised communication in the one-way Numbers-on-Forehead model. Their work addresses a long-standing open problem proposed by Gavinsky and Pudlák, using a lifted variant of the Hidden Matching problem to achieve a quantum protocol costing . A key finding is the proof that any corresponding randomised protocol requires sharply more communication, scaling as for a -party setting, and establishing a substantial advantage for quantum communication even in generalised scenarios. Quantum protocols achieve exponential communication speedup for Hidden Matching Communication costs for solving the Hidden Matching problem have now dropped to O (log n), a substantial improvement over the previous lower bound of Ω( n1/3 2k/3 ) for a k-party setting. This represents the first exponential separation between quantum and randomised communication in the one-way Numbers-on-Forehead model. Previously, establishing such a clear distinction between quantum and classical communication within this restricted model, where players share limited information, with only one initiating communication, remained an open challenge. The Numbers-on-Forehead model is a fundamental construct in communication complexity, serving as a simplified framework for analysing the inherent limitations of information exchange between parties. It posits...

Portable data centres to address rising levels of curtailment WinDC has teamed with American computing company Armada to deploy a network of modular data centres at renewable energy generation sites across Australia, helping satisfy increasing demand for computing infrastructure and rising levels of curtailment across the country’s solar and wind fleet. Utility-scale solar and wind curtailment in Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) reached a record high of more than 7 TWh in 2025, up more than 60% year-on-year, according to analyst Rystad Energy. This is forecast to grow to more than 10 TWh in 2026. At the same time, Australia’s data centre sector is booming, driven by global growth in artificial intelligence and digital services. This growth is energy intensive – data centres already account for about 5% of Australia’s electricity and that share is forecast to reach 8% by 2030, with some analyses warning it could even hit 15% under high-demand scenarios. WinDC said its model addresses these challenges directly, suggesting that locating energy-intensive data centres at regional renewable generation sites will help prevent energy from being lost in transmission lines or curtailed due to oversupply in the wider network and also mitigate the impact of data centres on the grid. “For renewable asset owners, hosting a WinDC...

70 Years of Government Data, Now Just a Search Away - Thanks to These AI Tools Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming how we live and work — writing emails, generating art, and answering questions in seconds. But beyond these high-tech breakthroughs, a quieter shift is underway. One that isn’t about creating something new but about unlocking what already exists. Across India, decades of public data from parliamentary debates and census records to ministry reports sit scattered in PDFs, scanned documents, and hard-to-navigate archives. Technically public, yet practically out of reach for most people. For journalists chasing facts, researchers building studies, or citizens trying to understand policy, accessing this information has long meant hours and sometimes days of manual searching. This is the gap that Factly, a Hyderabad-based research and data journalism organisation, has been working to bridge since 2016. And today, with its AI-powered tools Dataful and Tagore AI, it is rethinking what access to public data can actually look like. A vision rooted in transparency Factly’s story begins with one man’s conviction that transparency is the foundation of democracy. Rakesh Dubbudu, 42, an engineer-turned-transparency-campaigner, has been on this journey for years. Following his engineering education, he became deeply involved with India’s Right to Information (RTI) movement, working tirelessly to hold government systems accountable. This work...

The hard data: What happened to Israelis' sleep during the war - and how it can be fixed Sleep is one of the central anchors of our physical and mental health, but it is also the first to be affected in situations of pressure and stress. In a special webinar by the Tel Aviv University Alumni Organization, Dr. Michal Kahn presented the most up-to-date research from the field and practical ways to cope with sleep disorders in the shadow of the war. Sleep is not just rest time – it is an active and critical process. It is essential for growth, especially in children, for body recovery, for clearing toxins from the brain, and for preserving memories. However, in wartime situations, our nervous system enters a state of “hyperarousal”. The sympathetic system operates intensely, disrupts the ability to self-soothe, and makes it difficult for us to fall into the much-needed sleep for recovery. The war in numbers: What is happening to Israelis’ sleep? Dr. Michal Kahn, a clinical psychologist, senior lecturer, and head of the Kahn Sleep Lab at the School of Psychological Sciences at Tel Aviv University, a graduate of three degrees at the School of Psychological Sciences in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Tel Aviv University, presented worrying but important data from a study conducted...

Big tech was embracing clean energy and turning a corner on climate change. Then AI data centers arrived The race to deploy artificial intelligence is complicating tech companies’ commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, most of which come from the burning of gas, oil and coal and drive climate change. They say they must be flexible as they rush to build sprawling data centers that can consume more power than entire cities. “Even if they haven’t officially revised their goals, they are starting to acknowledge that, ‘Yeah, we’re maybe not on track,’” said Patrick Huang, a senior analyst at Wood Mackenzie. Now, Huang said, the companies must use whatever kinds of power they can to stay competitive — and increasingly that is natural gas, which is mostly methane, a planet-warming greenhouse gas. Tech companies bought record amounts of clean energy in 2024 and 2025, according to the Clean Energy Buyers Association. But total emissions have gone up over roughly the first five years of their climate commitments, according to companies’ sustainability reports. Google’s emissions jumped nearly 50%. Amazon’s rose by 33%, Microsoft’s more than 23% and Meta’s more than 60%. Data centers used about 4.6% of total U.S. electricity in 2024, a share that could nearly triple by 2028, according to government estimates. Some analysts predict nationwide electricity...

Data From Chinese Moon Lander Shows Signs of Peculiar Radiation "Cavity" Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Email address Thank you! As NASA continues to push for a permanent presence on the Moon, future space travelers will face plenty of dangers, from micrometeorite showers battering the lunar surface to the unknown effects of spending prolonged periods of time in just one sixth of Earth’s gravity. Deep space radiation also remains a major hazard. NASA’s Artemis 2 mission, which is slated to launch as early as next week, will see astronauts venturing far beyond the Moon, reaching the furthest mankind has ever been away from home, and likely exposing them to significantly higher levels of radiation. The fear: such cosmic rays could penetrate astronauts’ bodies and damage DNA or increase the risk of developing cancer. But thanks to recent research by an international team of researchers, there may be a peculiar “cavity” of reduced cosmic radiation that could provide them with shelter. This cavity includes Moon and extends far beyond it into space, and only appears at a specific moment of time in the Moon’s orbit around the Earth, at which point cosmic rays die down significantly. As detailed in a paper published this week in the journal...

AI systems are enabling mass surveillance in the US, and there is no national law that 'meaningfully limits' the use of this data For decades, cars dictated urban planning in the United States. Few could have predicted that they would one day also double as nodes for surveillance. In thousands of towns and cities across the U.S., automatic license plate readers have been installed at major intersections, bridges and highway off-ramps. Article continues below These camera-based systems capture the license plate data of passing vehicles, along with images of the vehicle and time stamps. More recently, these systems are using artificial intelligence to create a vast, searchable database that can be integrated with other law enforcement data repositories. As a scholar of technology policy and data governance, I see the expansion of automatic license plate readers as a source of deep concern. It's happening as government authorities are seeking ways to target immigrant and transgender communities, are already using AI to monitor protests, and are considering deploying AI systems for mass surveillance. Eyes on the road Using cameras to track license plates dates to the 1970s, when the U.K. was embroiled in a long-simmering conflict with the Irish Republican Army. The Met, London's police force, developed a system that used closed-circuit television cameras to monitor and record the license plates of vehicles entering...
