FUNERARY INSCRIPTION OF MARITIMUS AND QUINTA, 1-25 CE. CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS Maritimi / Antoniae Drusi (scil. uxoris) l(iberti), / rogatoris. // Quintae / Antoniae Drusi (scil. uxoris) l(ibertae), / cantricis. "(Tomb) of Maritimus, freedman of Antonia (Minor), (wife) of Drusus, employed for receiving guests. (Tomb) of the singer Quinta, freedwoman of Antonia (Minor), (wife) of Drusus." These two people, freed slaves working in the household of the powerful imperial woman Antonia Minor, have a simple marble plaque to mark their tomb, with their inscriptions put into two tabulæ ansatæ inscribed rather abstractly onto the marble. It was fixed to the tomb with three iron nails, which have left large rush haloes on the marble. Maritimus was a rogator or greeter, and Quinta was a singer, for Antonia Minor in her widowhood, after the death of her husband Drusus, brother of the emperor Tiberius.
This #EpigraphyTuesday offers us a simple funerary inscription now in the #CapitolineMuseums, identifying the occupants of a tomb outside the Porta Tiburtina of #Rome as a married couple, freed slaves, Maritimus and Quinta, from the household of #AntoniaMinor, wife of #Drusus. #AncientBluesky 🏺
STATUE BASE FROM THE FORUM OF AUGUSTUS, 2 BCE. TRAJAN'S MARKETS [Nero] Cl[a]udiu[s], Ti(beri) f(ilius), / [Dru]sus German[i]cus, / [co(n)s(ul)], pr(aetor) urb(anus), q(uaestor), aug(ur), imp(erator)/[app]ellatus in Germania "Nero Claudius Drusus Germanicus, son of Tiberius, consul, urban praetor, quaestor, augur, acclaimed as commander in Germany". This is the fragmented statue base of a member of the Claudian gens absorbed into the family of Augustus, the great military hero Drusus, second son of Livia, wife of Augustus, by her first marriage to Tiberius Claudius. Drusus had a hugely successful military career and held civil office. He was acclaimed as imperator by his troops after they defeated the German tribe of the Cherusci in 11 BCE. He died two years later and was commemorated in the part of the Forum of Augustus dedicated to his family.
#EpigraphyTuesday offers us a shattered and recomposed slab of Luni marble from the #Forum of #Augustus in #Rome. Its #inscription has been somewhat devoured by the human termites who ran the lime kilns but is easily legible as a statue dedication to #Drusus #Germanicus. #AncientBluesky 🏺
A picture of a card from the Vienna card catalogue with a picture of the token cut out from an auction catalogue, accompanied by the handwritten note 'Sternberg XIV (24.5.1984), along with 'Drusus' and 'Tessera, 23 n.Chr., 2.74g').
really interesting #token that seems to celebrate #Drusus' consulship in AD 15. Drusus is shown bare headed on one side accompanied by the legend DRVSVS CAESAR, and a curule chair flanked by fasces is shown on the other, along with the legend COS (with some graffiti, XI, below?).
