The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37) In this famous story, Jesus defines what it truly means to be a "neighbor." A Jewish man is robbed, beaten, and left for dead on the side of the road. Religious leaders pass by and ignore him. A Samaritan, a member of a despised ethnic group, is moved with compassion, binds the man's wounds, pays for his stay at an inn, and promises to return and cover any extra costs. Jesus concludes by telling the interrogating lawyer to "go and do likewise," radically expanding the definition of neighbor to include anyone in need, even one's cultural enemies. The parable of the Sheep and the Goats (Matthew 25:31–46) This story describes Jesus's final judgment of the nations based on their compassionate actions. The righteous ("sheep") are welcomed into the kingdom for serving "the least of these" by feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, welcoming strangers, clothing the naked, and visiting the sick and imprisoned. The unrighteous ("goats") are condemned because they failed to show this same compassion, thereby neglecting Jesus himself. Jesus reveals that acts of mercy shown to the most vulnerable are equivalent to acts done for him.
Loving your enemies (Luke 6:27–36) Jesus explicitly commands his followers to extend compassion and forgiveness to those who wish them harm. "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you" (Luke 6:27–28). He tells his listeners to be merciful, "just as your Father is merciful," emphasizing that this radical, self-sacrificial love is a reflection of God's own character. Compassion for the multitude (Matthew 9:36) This verse describes the motivation for Jesus's ministry. "When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd". This deep empathy for the people's spiritual and physical needs drove his actions, from teaching to healing. Compassion for the leper (Matthew 8:1–4) In a society that ostracized lepers as unclean, Jesus defied social norms by touching and healing one. A leper approaches Jesus, expressing his faith that Jesus can heal him. Jesus reaches out and touches the man, instantly cleansing him. The act of touch was a radical expression of compassion, directly defying the laws of ceremonial purity.
The Feeding of the 5,000 (Matthew 14:13–21) This miracle demonstrates Jesus's practical and compassionate concern for the physical needs of people. After a long day of teaching, a huge crowd is hungry. Jesus rejects the disciples' suggestion to send the crowd away and instead miraculously multiplies five loaves and two fish to feed everyone, with plenty of leftovers. Forgiving his executioners (Luke 23:34) While being crucified, Jesus offers forgiveness to the Roman soldiers and Jewish leaders who put him on the cross. He prays, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing". This is the ultimate expression of radical compassion, offering grace and mercy in the face of immense suffering and injustice.
