An illustration of "Dilla Time" from Dan Charnas's exhaustive biography of the same name, showing how Dilla's production moved beyond mechanical straight time using MPC's rigid, perfectly in sync beats, and more relaxed, swung beats (emulating jazz swing time), along with turntables to emulate swing time. And finally, Dilla's use of MPCs to create a new, fresh (and often hard to explain or to pin down) "Dilla Time"-- merging combinations of straight and swung time with different drum sources and other beats (kick drum, hi hat, snare, etc. etc.) Pure genius.
