Shinola just unveiled this J Dilla watch, part of its “Great American” series. Pretty cool, and a sick design — but I dunno, is Dilla the right icon for a timepiece? I’d constantly be fretting about whether I’m a minute late or 4.7 seconds early. #dillatime

An illustration of "Dilla Time" from Dan Charnas's exhaustive biography of the same name, showing how Dilla's production moved beyond mechanical straight time using MPC's rigid, perfectly in sync beats, and more relaxed, swung beats (emulating jazz swing time), along with turntables to emulate swing time. And finally, Dilla's use of MPCs to create a new, fresh (and often hard to explain or to pin down) "Dilla Time"-- merging combinations of straight and swung time with different drum sources and other beats (kick drum, hi hat, snare, etc. etc.) Pure genius.

I’ve been reading #DillaTime by Dan Charnas it’s incredible. It’s a hip-hop nerds dream. Equal parts music theory, Detroit history & celebration of the life & times of J. Dilla. It’s even made me dig back into some of my favorite Dilla joints & albums I have listened to that weren’t on my radar.

Great read! I’m a big fan of J Dilla, and this book just added more to his story that I did not know. The story of his life just makes you want to keep reading. I have lost sleep at night because I stayed up to read as much as I could. Get this book!!
