Q: Very surprised I haven't seen more people talk about Dante being patient 0267... specifically the part where he wakes up completely blind? The idea of someone we normally see as very threatening having to trust and rely on Francis especially while being blind (and assumedly a bit weak from trying to recover) is very cute to me.. A: I haven't seen much talk about it either now that you mention it. Agh I'm still sooo unsure how I feel about it - I was convinced because of the right eye replacement that it would be vittorino until the anniversary streams lol but yeah upon further thought I think it does make more sense that it's Dante (the whole “he consented to every surgery as long as it was Francis in charge” is consistent with what we know about them).
A: But ah ah yes I think a lot about Dante at the Basilica having to endure all of these surgeries, all of these strange ailments he's suffering from and how each surgery just seems to make it worse. I think he'd be bedridden and weak a LOT of the time, probably very dependent on Francis and the other priests at times. And you're right, this is a very different impression than we typically have of him in the game because he's so hellbent and dangerous. AGHHHH I can't emphasize enough how much I want to know what these characters were like at the time of the Basilica's operation. The snippets we've seen of Leon and what we can gather about Dante seem quite different from how they appear currently aghhg I wanna KNOW.

Dante wouldn't normally drink but Leon keeps ordering him to have some with him.... is this anything A: ОННН ОННН danteleon corruption arc... beautiful. Leon already more than halfway through a bottle and telling Dante to lighten up and try it, offering to feed it to him if that would please him. Dante is practically reeling; at knowing what Leon is doing is against the rules but unable to do anything about it because well.. Leon IS the authority here. He doesn't particularly like drinking, doesn't like the way it dulls his senses. And it doesn't exactly play nicely with the cocktail of drugs he's been put on in the wake of his surgeries.
A: But Leon is telling him to, and he's... technically his doctor. So he does as he's told, and he just keeps taking more and more, every time Leon tells him to, and it hits him FAST. Hits him fast and hits him hard, so that he hardly even thinks twice about how Leon is leaning against him, clinging to his arm to keep himself from swaying. "There- doesn't this feel better?" He asks. "Doesn't it hurt less now?" Dante supposes he's right. He feels light and fuzzy, in a pleasant way. The pain concentrated in his limbs seems further away, a dull ache at most. But Leon seems so relieved as well, eyes glassy with a dopey smile on his lips and Dante realizes that he never knew Leon had been in pain as well.

Q: i would really like to see how you see dante and francis's relationship A: To answer this I have to get into speculation and theory territory so forgive me if this gets a bit long. To be frank, I am of the belief that Francis never actually set foot in the basilica. I think Leon and Francis did some kind of fucky merging surgery and Leon was the only one who went to the basilica, using Francis's name when he did. At first it bothered the hell out of me that Ryker never mentioned Leon's name to anyone they met in Rosso Cadere until I got the dialogue where they DID ask Accardi and Juliek and neither of them reacted. Juliek claims he doesn't remember names but Accardi seemed to know who that surgeon was in his dreamscape, so I was a little surprised that he was never written to have a response too. Unless neither of them knew the name "Leon" because that's not what Leon was going by at the time.
A: the other thing that makes me entertain this theory is some of Dubuk's answers on tumblr when asked about the relationship between Francis and other members of the cast. Namely that dubuk said vittorino and Francis had never met (surprising), but also that Dante and Francis never met while they were both alive (earth shattering). You would think a bishop and his heir would have met. Considering what we know about Dante doing everything he said. You would think. That they've met. Unless it was never Francis and always just Leon. In addition, Dante never mentions Francis but talks a LOT about Leon when he confronts Ryker. So. In a long winded manner I guess I'm saying I suspect that Dante and Francis don't actually have a relationship, or if they do it's not a relationship we have ANY in-game knowledge of. Take all of this with a grain of salt because it's obviously a theory but that's how I'm going to approach your actual question. I'm just going to be assuming Francis in this case is Leon-posing-as-Francis lol.
A: And what we know about Dante and "Francis" is that Dante has a LOT of trust in him. Again if we take dubuk's word from his stream that patient 0267 is Dante, he consented to every surgery inflicted upon him as long as it was Francis in charge, and the diary in the underground graveyard describes him as having no malicious intent but carrying out the orders of the bishop. Dante describes himself as Leon's crop/wheat. I think it's really clear that when Dante was alive, he was utterly devoted to Francis, probably to his own detriment. There's a lot more to dig into regarding Dante's devotion to Francis/Leon and how its reflected in his appearance. I think it's interesting that he has no clear face; I get the feeling he doesn't have an identity of his own because his entire identity was mirroring and serving Leon. His whole hunting motif is a reflection of younger Leon, he has the same hairstyle as younger Leon. Once you notice it you don't stop noticing it. And now ive blabbed so bad that I've hit character limit so I'll continue blabbing in a twitter thread SORRY.
Now that I've fucking talked your ear off about my theories, let me blab about how this translates to how I personally write him. This is just my interpretation, entirely up for debate as to how in-character it is compared to canon. When I write basilica-era Dante, I tend to write him as a bit more meek I guess? Than he appears in canon. I see him as being extremely obedient and lawful (the law being whatever Leon and the church says, morals be damned). I tend to write him quieter, though I still think he has the capacity for snark and dramatics when paired with a character like vittorino. I write Dante and vittorino as foils in the sense that Dante is the perfect follower and vittorino is rebellious and more independent. This is probably just me bringing my fave trope into the pairing but danteleon have a master/guarddog dynamic to me LOL. Anyway sorry to Go Off, I think Dante is a fascinating character. he's such an compelling concept to me. The minute I realized he was a "lacking identity because of his devotion to another character" guy I was hooked
