The glare of yellow light pierced the veil of sleep, washing her in the memories of the fire in the hall. And with a scream of pure terror, as if she was once more peering beyond the veil to the beast she was betrothed to, Auspus threw herself out of bed and onto cold earthen floor. Grappling with her sheets as her mind fought to regain control of her body. Her breathing came in heavy bursts as her heart raged within her chest, forcing her to study where she was with aching eyes. Walls of stone, clay and wood. Thatch beneath wooden roofing. No windows. One door. She huddled against the bed, panic subsiding as she quietly accepted that she was safe. The specter had kept its word. She had survived the night, if just barely in her own opinion. She felt herself down, discovering she was still in her clothes - her blue shirt, her hunter’s pants. Boots were gone, easily seen resting alongside a chair where her leather armor rested. And beside that was a small table that held her bag. And atop the bag lay both the damned grimoire that had been used against the people of the kingdom. And laying across both bag and book was Salazar, a seal of protection from the darkness that lay within its pages. “It kept its promise,” Auspus groaned, placing her hands along the back of her head as it began to pound with the pain of thirst and sudden awareness. “Thank the gods…”
I started the final chapter of this accursed #novelette #WIP. If I keep at this pace, it'll be finished and ready to release by the end of the month.
And once it's finished, I won't have this albatross around my frigging neck...
