This image shows 3 major ways long prison sentences don't serve to deter crime.

Under Truth in Centencing laws, half of people currently incarcerated in Illinois are required to serve at least 75%, and often 100%, of their sentences, even if they complete rehabilitative programs, maintain good behavior, and demonstrate growth. Repealing these laws would save $104.8 million in the first 3 years.

Manditory mimimums force judges to give long sentences regardless of the facts of the case or extenuating circumstances.

Illinois does not currently offer parole. This is a mistake that should be rectified.
