Evaluation of GPT-5 in Periodontitis Staging and Grading: Retrospective Observational Study Background: Periodontitis is a chronic gum disease affecting approximately 42% of adults aged 30 years and older in the United States. Training dental students to accurately diagnose and manage periodontitis is a critical component of dental education and clinical care. Recent advances in large language models offer new opportunities to support both domains, yet their performance in periodontal diagnosis remains largely unexplored, particularly for newer models such as GPT-5. Objective: This study conducted an exploratory evaluation of GPT-5’s ability to stage and grade periodontitis. Methods: A total of 25 publicly available clinical cases explicitly reporting periodontitis stage and grade were identified through Google and PubMed searches. Each case description was entered into GPT-5 using a zero-shot prompting approach to assess guideline-based reasoning without exemplar conditioning. The model’s predictions were compared with the published reference diagnoses. Performance was measured using accuracy, 95% CI, unweighted Cohen κ, and weighted Cohen κ. Results: Across these cases, GPT-5 showed marked class-dependent performance and a tendency to overestimate disease severity. Grading performance was notably imbalanced, with high recall for grade C but substantially lower discrimination for grade B. GPT-5 achieved a staging accuracy of 68% (95% CI 48.4%-82.8%) and a grading accuracy of 77.3% (95% CI 56.6%-89.9%), with corresponding Cohen κ values of 0.454 (95% CI 11.0%-75.6%) and 0.179 (95% CI −15.8% to 63.8%), respectively. While staging performance showed fair agreement beyond chance, the low κ for grading indicates poor agreement and limited reliability in distinguishing periodontal disease severity. Conclusions: These findings suggest that although GPT-5 demonstrates potential for guideline-based periodontitis staging and grading, its current diagnostic performance, particularly for periodontitis grading, limits its use in clinical assessment and educational training. Meaningful application in periodontal diagnosis and training will require substantial improvements in reliability and rigorous validation in larger, more diverse, and prospectively collected datasets.

Impact of the Practice of Playing Video Games on Technical Skills Development in Preclinical Dental Education: Preliminary Cross-Sectional Observational Study Background: Video games are becoming increasingly accessible and occupy a prominent position among students’ leisure activities. Recent studies have demonstrated that engagement with video games can facilitate the development of specific abilities, such as visuospatial skills and hand-eye coordination. Thus, it seemed relevant to investigate whether the practice of playing video games could enhance the technical capabilities of novice dental students. Objective: The objective of this study was to ascertain whether dental students who identified themselves as video game players exhibited differences in fundamental technical skills in comparison to students who identified as nonplayers. This preliminary study aimed to validate the methodology and measurement tools for a subsequent prospective study. Methods: Second-year dental students who were novices in the field of preclinical dental practice were divided into 2 groups: one designated nonplayers and the other players. The visual, motor, and cognitive coordination of the students was assessed using 3 different tests. The initial assessment focused on evaluating spatial ability, while the subsequent assessments addressed arm-hand coordination and the velocity of execution. The study data were collected in September 2021. Results: This study included 92 second-year dental students (mean age 19.49, SD 0.8 years). Thirty-seven students were placed in the player group (40%), while 55 were placed in the nonplayer group (60%). The findings showed no statistically significant differences between the two groups when the 3 distinct tests were administered. The nonplayer group made fewer mistakes on the test evaluating spatial ability (P=.051) and achieved a higher score on the modified Precision Manual Dexterity Test, which evaluates arm-hand coordination, compared to the player group (P=.17), but without statistical significance. The nonplayer group took more time to perform the pulpotomy during the third test, which evaluated execution speed, compared to the player group, again without significance (P=.87). Conclusions: This study did not demonstrate significant differences between player and nonplayer dental students who participated in the study with regard to their fundamental technical abilities in a preclinical training environment. Nevertheless, it validated the #feasibility of a methodology for a future longitudinal study to concentrate on the evolution of acquiring technical skills during preclinical training in these two populations. Consequently, further investigation is warranted to determine the potential impact of video games on the acquisition of surgical skills, including in dentistry.

Dental Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions of Blended Learning in the #covid19 and Post–#covid19 Years: Survey Study Background: The outbreak of the #covid19 pandemic created significant challenges but also a unique opportunity, accelerating the evolution of higher education, including dental education. This encouraged dental education to adopt more flexible modes like blended learning. Objective: This study aimed to explore senior undergraduate dental students’ views on blended learning during and after the #covid19 pandemic and to identify modifiable factors influencing their engagement. Methods: A survey was conducted among final-year undergraduate students at a top-ranking dental school in mainland China during the fall semesters of 2020-2021 and 2023-2024. The survey assessed satisfaction with blended learning, preferences for engagement, strengths compared to purely online or offline teaching, and factors influencing engagement during and after the pandemic. Results: Response rates were 75% (85/114) in 2020 and 73% (47/64) in 2023. Blended learning was used in 53% (26/49) of evaluated courses. High satisfaction was reported by 82% (93/114) in 2020 and 59% (38/64) in 2023, with significant differences between high- and low-satisfaction groups (P

The Effectiveness of Live and Prerecorded Video Demonstrations in Teaching Restorative Dentistry to Undergraduate Students: Cohort Study Background: Mastering complex psychomotor skills is essential in undergraduate dental education, yet traditional live demonstrations face limitations such as high instructor to student ratios and restricted viewing angles. Pre recorded video demonstrations offer scalable, repeatable instruction and the ability to integrate multimedia cues, but may lack real time interaction and immediate feedback. Limited evidence compares these teaching modalities, particularly regarding gender differences, in restorative dentistry skill acquisition. Objective: This study aimed to (1) compare first year dental students’ knowledge acquisition and procedural performance following a live versus a pre recorded video demonstration of a Class II amalgam restoration, and (2) evaluate whether gender influences outcomes within each demonstration method. Methods: Fifty-one students enrolled in an “Introduction to Operative Dentistry” course (AY 2024–2025) participated in this cohort study. The students were randomized into live demonstration (LD, n = 26) or video demonstration (VD, n = 25) groups. Both groups received identical lectures and demonstrations of a standardized class II cavity preparation and amalgam restoration. Knowledge was assessed via pre and post-procedural multiple-choice questionnaires, and procedural performance was graded by two blinded raters using a 10-point rubric. Student perceptions were measured with an 8-item Likert survey. Mixed ANOVA, independent and paired t-tests evaluated between and within group differences; gender analyses used factorial ANOVA. Inter-rater reliability was confirmed (ICC = 0.991). Results: Baseline knowledge scores did not differ between groups. Post demonstration knowledge was significantly higher in LD (71.2 ± 17.3) than VD (58.4 ± 21.7; P = 0.024, Cohen’s d = 0.65). LD method demonstrated significant within-group improvement (P
