Alberta’s Unique Deregulated Electricity Grid Paves Way for Virtual Power Plants
Alberta's deregulated electricity grid has established itself as a hub for the practical implementation of virtual power plants (VPPs), making it the sole province capable of supporting a fully functional VPP to date. A notable example of this is sonnen's project at Blatchford Lands, which will be Canada's first home battery-based VPP within a master-planned community. The 100-home initiative incorporates 500 kW of solar generation and 2 MWh of battery storage, leveraging rooftop solar installations ranging from 5 kW to 10 kW per home, and demonstrates the potential for energy sourcing beyond provincial borders through cross-border agreements.
