I had that same feeling, especially in 3D, that the style had gotten comfortable in "repeatable results". My style for #DieselDust comes from 80s/90s styles with some Fred Perry and Chris Sanders influences.

Spent last week putting together the radioplay for #DieselDust episode 1. I got to experience all of those fun sessions again as I was tooting along with the edit.

Deliberate geometry vs. slapping things together with boolean cut. You can always go back and improve on your past work in *spare* moments if it quantifiably makes things better.
But don't let yourself get lost in the weeds. Put out your project. Improve as you go. 🧡

Not my best work, but it ticks a box 🦔☑️
A poly-efficient spiky hair helmet is... a nightmare. I started with a sculpt, but instead of doing retopology, I placed a punch of tapered cubes in the general shape. Connected them all. Subdiv'd, then sculpted.

I want the more old school anime look I grew up with when it comes to hair. Interesting and more complex shadows. So I cut and sharpen strand shapes into the helmet to give the shader a lot to do.
Generally it all still deforms fine when rigged. 🧡

Every hair helmet can stay as-is for NPCs or be built up to be more elaborate later. The real wonder for me is how my reasoning of shapes in box-modelling is improving just through simple tweaks to my method. It makes my brain hurt, but its a good hurt.⚡🧠⚡

"Why not just spherize the normals?"
There are some "ugly" shadows I want to avoid and others I dont. Face shadows? Yes, smooth those out any way possible. Contour shadows in hair styles? Significantly less so. I like them. They're what I grew up with in anime.

After ten years of working in #Blender 🧡, if asked, I still couldn't give you a solid theory on the best way to make a hair helmet. I'm still figuring it out every single time I make one.
