the Difference layer is completely white and sub-100% opacity. basically erase out the figure like a typical mask, then erase the big important parts with the red Screen. after that, bounce between green and blue to give the Wand tool very little work to do once you use it as a Selection source!
and for my own clarity, i merge the layers and turn it to a Luminance layer to not hurt my eyes, and then go to another layer and basically just color it in.
and finished! i also use a Fill Black Saturation layer to check color values to make sure that the illustration is easy on the eyes.
