Opinion: “What transpired, however, during Modi's onslaught on the foreign press in India?” — Aniruddh Sarkar, Voice Of Digi Bengal, Kolkata, India Link: https://lnkd.in/di6dKZUY 📰 In Shorts: Reuters’ X Account Blocked in India • Reuters’ X (formerly Twitter) account was found inaccessible to Indian users. • Indian Government denies issuing any takedown order. • Incident raises concerns over India's relationship with foreign media. • Critics link this to a broader trend of press suppression under the Modi administration. • Press freedom advocates and digital rights bodies demand transparency and accountability. Kolkata, India — July 2025 The official X (formerly Twitter) account of global news agency Reuters was blocked in India last week, prompting widespread concern over digital censorship and the shrinking space for press freedom in the country. In a statement issued on July 5, a Government of India spokesperson clarified, “There is no requirement from the Government of India to withhold Reuters, and we are continuously working with X to resolve the problem.” However, questions persist over the increasing friction between the Indian government and international media. A Mysterious Takedown The sudden unavailability of Reuters' X account to Indian users sparked speculation of a government-initiated takedown. While both Reuters and X have remained tight-lipped, several media watchdogs and digital rights organizations are demanding transparency. X has previously acknowledged compliance with government takedown requests in India, especially concerning content critical of government policies or related to protests and dissent. However, this case is unusual, as there appears to be no official legal order—or at least none disclosed publicly. #Reuters #PressFreedom #IndiaCensorship #ModiAndMedia #JournalismUnderFire #DigitalRightsIndia #FreedomOfExpression #ReutersBlockedIndia #VoiceOfDigiBengal #AniruddhSarkar #AniruddhSarkarOpinion #AniruddhSarkarReport
