She finished her routine and gracefully hopped off the table, and Dimitri realized with embarrassment that he had been staring despite his best efforts and had left his food to get cold. He hurriedly applied himself to his food, hoping to finish it before anyone noticed. He heard the room start to fill with conversation again, and his escorts commenting lewdly on the dancer. He kept his focus on the food, trying to tune out the conversation, but was stymied by the leader of his escorts clapping a hand on his shoulder. "We should give His Stuffiness the night. We all know he wouldn't do it on his own, but then maybe he'll get off his high horse about it!" Cheers went up around the table, while Dimitri tried to keep his face static. He could not afford to cause a scene here, as much as he was enraged by his escort treating her like an object. "With that cock of his, I'm sure he'll have her begging for more, even though he probably doesn't even know which hole to use!" another one piped up, to guffaws of laughter.
"She's a whore, it doesn't matter what he does, she'll be easy." Dimitri put his silverware down deliberately, knowing that he was likely to bend it otherwise. "Unless he breaks her in half like he does lances!" "Ehh, who cares, they're all the same." Dimitri saw red, and started to grab the cur and show him what it would be like to be broken like a lance - when a small hand on his shoulder stopped him, using just enough force to make him notice it. "Are you going to eat that?" a woman said in a monotone. He looked up, and saw the dancer pointing at a bread roll he hadn't touched. "Ah, no, please help yourself," he managed through his surprise. She took him up on his offer, grabbing the roll and demolishing it surprisingly quickly for such a petite woman.

Byleth didn’t bother to argue. It was an idealistic notion. Marriage was a transaction, whether you were a noble seeking power or a commoner calculating finances. The romance Flayn had found with Ferdinand was the true exception. At her lack of response, Flayn sighed. “Fine. You are entirely unromantic about marriage. But Dimitri…” she hesitated again, brows furrowed. “Well. What do you think of him?” “He is a useful symbol for legitimizing my reign,” Byleth recited, staring straight ahead. “His bloodline is highly respected. Marrying him will reduce the risk of—” Flayn cut her off with a stomp. “That is not what I meant,” she said huffily. Any impression of wisdom beyond her years vanished with her puffed out cheeks. “I do not care what political advantages Dimitri brings. I wish to know how you feel about him, as a person!”
