#DearDiary, Saturday Night Fever. There was a Monterey Pride event over at Pop And Hiss this past Saturday Night, and we were there. As there are no official gay bars on the Monterey Peninsula, it seemed important to attend. Not just in solidarity, but also because we have been jonesing quite honestly for some queer culture… specifically some after hours high faggotry. We understood that we probably weren’t going to get any of that, but dreamers gonna dream. Hey. Although Todd trying to explain “The Only Gay In The Village” skit from Little Britain to the Monterey Pride cover chargers at the door fell on deaf ears, we still had high hopes for the DISCO DANCE PARTY where “disco era attire” was “encouraged” and “dancing required!” Todd and I both certainly did get down and boogie, but we lazily and lamely wore the same old shit we always wear. For that reason alone, it would be wildly hypocritical of me to critique the inaccuracies of any party goer’s earnest attempts at discotheque time machine fashion realness, especially when everyone was having so much fun. Nobody likes a party pooper. However, the former jaded New Yorker in me couldn’t resist fantasizing about all the glorious and fabulous period correct style possibilities that were missed at the Super Seventies Retro Redux, just as my former closet case damaged self couldn’t keep from remembering like it was yesterday a sad and lonely thirteen-year-old four-eyed sissy boy fairy staring in awe and amazement at Studio 54 photographs torn from a People Magazine discovered at a ghost town library on a bleak and cruel military base somewhere in the middle of bumfuck shitsville nowhere Kansas 1978. Shout out and big thanks to the good-looking DJ who—when asked to play some “Bad Girls era Donna Summer”—astutely chose to spin a deliciously extended version of “Hot Stuff.” #TrueConfessions by #BillMullen
