If Moses killing the Egyptian followed immediately after Exodus 1:12 in J, then the source gave no introduction to who Moses was or his parents. (Baden 2012:74)

I expected an eminent professor's treatise "reviving the #DocumentaryHypothesis to persuade me, but it's having the opposite effect.

A snippet from the page of a book:
According to J, Jacob’s death comes almost immediately upon his arrival in Egypt (47:29–31), in line with Jacob’s statements that, having seen Joseph alive, he can finally die in peace (45:28; 46:30).

Statements like this (pictured) don't persuade me of the soundness of your #DocumentaryHypothesis theory. The immediately preceding verse says Jacob lived in Egypt for 17 years, and the author gives no argument why that verse belongs to a different source, merely assertion.

114. In the E source, no reason is given for Sarah's lack of offspring; when God promises Abraham that he will have a son of his own, that is, Isaac (Gen 15:4), there is no mention of relieving Sarah of barrenness. P is more explicit: Isaac's birth is miraculous because of Abraham's and Sarah's advanced ages, not barrenness (Gen. 17:16-19). Again, there is no mention of Sarah having been unable to bear children before this.

Okay, here's a silly argument (p.69-70 of Baden's Composition of the Pentateuch):
Sarah "says explicitly that she is barren-'Yahweh has kept me from bearing' (16:1)-a concept unique to J" and justified in note 114 (pic).

What is inability to conceive?

I realized that one model for the #DocumentaryHypothesis is Tatian's treatment of the four gospels in his #Diatessaron . But if we only had the Diatessaron, would we be able to reconstruct four gospels, using Hebrew Bible scholar methods? The answer is no, in part because gospels share material.

I'm entertained by a scholar arguing for the #DocumentaryHypothesis objecting to the Supplementary Hypothesis because it implies that the redactors are incompetent. If the redactors were competent, there would be no evidence to support the Documentary Hypothesis...

I taught the Bible as a historical document for years. I don't think that means what they think it means. #DocumentaryHypothesis #Authorship #Pastiche #TheRedactor
