What does it mean for something to be "sensitive" in China? This week's newsletter analyzes the classic tract from the Reform Era: "Political China" (edited by the now-imprisoned journalist #dongyuyu)
Great initiative from
#China journalists, editors, writers, National Press Club calling on #XiJinping govt to free #DongYuyu. Journalism is not a crime!

Speaking with PTS about the ongoing trial of Hong Kong publisher #JimmyLai and sentencing of Chinese journalist #DongYuyu to 7 years just for meeting with a diplomat. #Taiwan can help and should help all reporters looking for refuge from the oppressive Chinese regime.

Wonder what's the point of appeal?
Why bother with the CCP-dependent judicial system in #China?
An appeal allows #DongYuyu lawyers to access his files, request visiting him in the dark cell. Access allows family to gain info about his conditions behind bars. That's valuable for the victim.
Veteran journalist and commentator #DongYuyu has formally appealed his sentence with Beijing High Court. He was handed a 7-year sentence on "espionage" charge in late Nov., after spending 31 months in detention, including 6 in #RSDL.

Who is #DongYuyu?
Journalist in #China, in jail serving 7 yrs, charged by the gov for "espionage."
Jailing journalists for spying isn't new. Using trumped-up charges to silence journalists, academics, writers, critics has become more common. Why? To lower numbers of #POC.

Given China's primarily non-militaristic approach to foreign policy + the Russian invasion + the US/Israeli genocide, China has a great opportunity to take a lead in world affairs but not with such a heavy handed approach to journalists and dissenting voices #DongYuyu:
