Dorothy Height, born in 1912 in Richmond, Virginia, was a pioneering civil and women’s rights activist whose leadership shaped major 20th century social justice movements. Her advocacy began in high school as she organized and launched anti-lynching campaigns.

In 1928, she was admitted to Barnard College (New York, NY), but could not attend because the college did not allow Black students. After graduating from New York University and Columbia University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and a Master's Degree in Psychology, Ms. Height started her career as a social worker while also leading the charge to desegregate local YWCA facilities in Harlem, New York.

From 1947 to 1957, she served as the National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Ms. Height then elevated her membership status of the National Council of Negro Women to President in 1958, a position she held for the next 40 years. As president of the National Council of Negro Women, and one of thousands of unrecognized women of the Civil Right Movement, Ms. Height championed racial equality, voting rights, economic justice, and gender equity. During the March on Washington, while she was not allowed to deliver a keynote speech, she was the only woman seated behind the speakers. The highly popular series “A Different World” included a hall named after her.

Ms. Height advised U.S. presidents, organized community programs, and helped guide the 1963 March on Washington, even as women’s voices were often marginalized. Known for her strategic vision, quiet strength, and signature hats, she worked tirelessly to uplift Black families and empower young women, including receiving 24 honorary degrees. Her legacy endures as a model of courage, dignity, and transformative advocacy.

What happens when a law opens a door—but only halfway?
The 1964 Economic Opportunity Act aimed to fight poverty. It offered jobs, childcare, and health support—but often excluded poor women, especially Black women.
Who’s still left out today?
