中国の僧・善導(ぜんどう)が説いた、阿弥陀(あみだ)信仰に関する譬喩(ひゆ)を絵画化したもの。怒りや憎しみを象徴する火の河と、執着を象徴する水の河に挟まれても、阿弥陀如来を信じる白い一筋の道があれば、極楽浄土(ごくらくじょうど)に行くことが出来るということを示す。本図の場合、上三分の二が極楽浄土の様子であり、下三分の一のうち最下方が現世、火と水の河の間の白い道の先には、阿弥陀三尊が待つという構成である。 (The two sided river and the only white path)
