I missed the part where Redford romances Claudia Cardinale in a chalet in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Italian Alps.

Oh wait a minute, wait a minute. #WrongMovie

I missed the part where Redford escapes from Blofeld’s secret mountaintop lair in the Swiss alps.

Wow, better than I remember. I thought that was excellent. And I'd have to revisit some of his films, like The Candidate, but I think that could be Redford's best performance, imo. Certainly one of his best. #DownhillRacer #TCMParty

She’s “decoration” for the film. An accessory to men. #TCMParty #DownhillRacer

Can I buy Gene Hackman as a ski coach? Yes, I think I can. Dabney Coleman? Too soon to tell. #DownhillRacer #tcmparty

I do fondly remember learning to count and tell time and read a clock while watching the alpine skiing on “Wide World of Sports” in the early 1970s. The agony of defeat, or da feet! #DownhillRacer #tcmparty

It’s a VERY ominous, insidious score for a ski movie. Of all the instruments I might associate with alpine downhill skiing, the harpsichord would be at the bottom, with the tuba and the moonshine jug. Another example of the 1960s harpsichord fixation run amok. #DownhillRacer #tcmparty

I was a #DownhillRacer in the sixties. Then I discovered drugs, sex, and rock & roll and went downhill. #TCMParty

Loved the #DownhillRacer pick - haven’t seen that movie in many years and it make me want to watch. For my money it’s a superior to the rather schmaltzy #TheNatural - also 1969
#BobRedford - come on! #TheBigPicture #podcasts #TracyLetts

Skiing is terrifying. I don't know how anybody does it. How do you not break a limb every single time?

Anyways, #DownhillRacer (1969, Michael Ritchie) is like a horror movie for me. #TCMParty

Catching up on the Robert Redford marathon. Looking forward to filling some gaps in his filmography (and bawling my eyes out). It still doesn't feel real that he's gone.

#DownhillRacer (1969) is the one I've been most looking forward to seeing for the first-time. #TCMParty

Robert Redford getting a taste of his own narcissistic bs from Camilla Sparv in #DownhillRacer is so delightful. You get some insight into why his character is such a jerk in the film, but that guy gets no sympathy from me. #TCMParty

#DownhillRacer is not grabbing my attention *at all* so will come back for #TheCandidate at 10. The only thing I’ve gleaned is that the opening & title sequence must have been an inspiration for the 1980 Lake Placid official film (which is bonkers) that #TCM aired last year as part of…

⛷️ And even though #DownhillRacer has a lot of sports movie hallmarks (hotshot rookie going head-to-head with both the coach and his teammates) it ultimately feels a lot more arthousey than sports films usually tend to be. 📽️🎞️

⛷️ I had thought about watching #DownhillRacer already back when Gene Hackman passed. Admittedly there aren't many films about alpine skiing as a sport (that I can think of off the top of my head at least) but that's basically the only thing it has going for itself as far as I'm concerned. 📽️🎞️

Last week, #downhillracer came up in a conversation, as I'd been meaning to rewatch this very early #Redford film.

What a great actor, spokesman, and cultural icon.
