I thought that caring about yourself, focusing on yourself, was something you had to earn. You had to age into it. Younger women could care for themselves only so far as it made them more attractive in some way. I really did want to skip right to being a granny.

When I was growing up, self-care was a thing that grannies and aunties did. Older women could "rest their eyes" while sitting on the couch, plant flowers in their favorite colors, set boundaries and say no to being around certain people or being spoken to in a way.
