Niet alleen in Amerika maar ook in Nederland verandert de democratie in een oligarchie. Wereldwijd is een soort staatsgreep gaande waarbij de rijkste mensen de volledige politieke macht grijpen. Sinds de jaren '80 is dit proces gaande. De rijken worden extreem veel rijker, armen veel armer en de middenklasse verdwijnt naar beneden, verliest invloed, wordt machteloos gemaakt. Politici als Wilders en Trump helpen definitief de oligarchen aan de macht. Zij doen in de politiek alsof ze de burgers waarschuwen en willen helpen. Zij wijzen echter naar andere groepen, bijvoorbeeld immigranten, als zondebokken. Eenmaal aan het bewind is de aandacht alleen gericht op de zondebokken, het versterken van grenzen, bouwen van muren. Stilletjes wordt de belasting op kapitaal, bezit en dividend verlaagd. De rijkste mensen krijgen niet alleen meer kapitaal maar ook steeds meer zeggenschap over beleid en daarbij worden de beschermende (controlerende) democratische processen ontmanteld.
We worden afgeleid met discussies of immigranten wel een probleem zijn, hoeveel het er zijn, of het voorgestelde beleid wel mogelijk is. De opportunistische politicus heeft lak aan democratisch gekozen bestaande regels en internationale afspraken wat weerstand oproept bij de ene burger en blijdschap bij de andere die de gevestigde orde wantrouwt. Die gaan met elkaar in discussie. Door te bezuinigen op dat wat we het hardst nodig hebben (zorg, welzijn, onderwijs), en echte problemen (klimaatverandering, wachtlijsten in de zorg, schuldenproblematiek) te bagatelliseren of ontkennen, gaan burgers over die onderwerpen protesteren, met elkaar discussiëren en verliezen hierop hun focus en energie. Zo wordt alles voorbereid voor de overname van macht, voor de genadeklap door de oligarchen waarbij het democratische systeem platgelegd wordt.
