Twelfth Night, in early January, marks the end of the Christmas season. It celebrates the arrival (twelve days after Jesus’s birth) of the Three Kings, led by a star to the newborn Christ. In Catholic households, Twelfth Night was a time for celebration and raucous feasting, and Steen takes us to a wealthy family’s party. Look for the details: the egg shells on the floor where children play with candles, symbols of the Kings; on the table, the boy who offers the little “king,” wearing a paper crown, a bite of his waffle. In the doorway at the left, a group of carolers appear, bearing a star-shaped lantern.

This painting was one of several stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in 1990. Its whereabouts are unknown.
