🤝From joint sessions to new initiatives, the cooperation between #EAERE and #EAAE is thriving!

🌾The EAERE session "Environmental Challenges in AgriFood Systems" at the EAAE Congress was a great success. The session featured EAERE members' contributions, and EAAE members as discussants.

Thanks @moritzfritschle.bsky.social. It was a real privilege to be invited to deliver the first of the #EAAE2025 #EAAE 2025 keynotes. I got to bring together two of my favourite topics, #foodsecurity and #sciencefiction. Bonus was to meet up with former @uniofreading.bsky.social colleagues.

CONTEXT: Current literature in agricultural economics and agricultural sociology states that the contract design mainly determines farmers' participation in voluntary agri-environment (AE) contracts. Evidence from behavioural sciences has shown the importance of incorporating be-havioural factors in farmers' decision-making.

OBJECTIVE: We estimate farmers' preferences for agri-environment contracts in the UK, France and the Netherlands. Our research examines how the behavioural variables of farmer identity and willingness to take risks affect farmers' willingness to participate.

METHODS: We conducted a discrete choice experiment embedded in an online survey with 767 farmers. Using a mixed-logit model, we include two behavioural factors, farmer identity and willingness to take risk, in the choice modelling.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Most farmers' preferences for who is organizing the contract and how they are paid are neither affected by their conservationist and productivist farmer (self-)identities nor their willingness to take risk. We identified a statistically significant but not robust effect, showing that relatively productivist farmers tend to prefer contracts organized by retail companies. However, we show a high heterogeneity in farmers' preferences and a potential for farmer identity to predict farmers' decisions on a broader level. Therefore, more research is needed on the effect of different farmer identities on decision-making.

The upcoming two weeks are conference weeks. The next week starts with the #EAAE at Bonn. Where I present on the 26th, my research whether the identity identity of farmers' can affect participation in agri-enviornment contracts. 👨‍🌾👩‍🌾 1/2
