Oooo interesting q from the floor at #EANCongress25
"Should engineers sign a kind of hypocritical oath wrt sustainability"
Ooft. At the #EANCongress25 Patricia Ashman just asked anyone in the audience to stand up if they've ever been told "you only got this job due to your "diversity""
Sadly soooo many women & people of colour stood up.
All ages.
Ooft.
At #EANCongress25 and Prof Duncan Ivison VC of Manchester Uni and a Prof of political philosophy has just told a room full of engineers that "you can change the perception of engineering - you can go into schools etc".
Gah.
Stage with a "congress 2025 realising the vision" backdrop. With a stand mic.
Will be giving the after dinner speech at the #EANCongress25 tonight. I hope they are not expecting a comedy set!
Dane Helen Atkinson (Canfield Uni)
Q: why do UK universities not have a great impact / benefit
A)
1) Ppl (researchers) don't listen
2) academic systems reward more fundamental research which is further away from people/ benefit.
#EANCongress25
So far from the #EANCongress25 it seems to me that universities are going to be so busy struggling with finances and working out how to be even more efficient / what to drop, that any planning related to improving / updating the curricula is gonna be shelved for the next five years or so.
Interesting discussion at #EANCongress25 about how universities are collaborating with local industry, trade organisations etc.
Or not.

#EANCongress25 in order to be agile we need excess capacity - which costs money (paraphrasing Dr Bev Gibbs, Director, Dyson IET)
Broad missions lead to diluted focus.
If we take on more home engineering students, we will just make a bigger loss - paraphrase of Prof Conchúr ó Bradáigh from Uni Sheffield at the #EANCongress25
"We need to do less with less. But how do we maintain morale and keep quality? "
Nick talks about the initiatives from government to make Universities broaden access to higher education, as well as to make a stronger contribution to economic growth and play a greater civic role. #EPCCongress25 #EANCongress25
Nick also talks to the (real terms) collapse of student maintenance and the challenging issues this is causing students in living costs. These formulations have been static since Gordon Brown was PM. #EPCCongress25 #EANCongress25
While we are often (rightly) focused on the lack of women in the engineering industries and degrees, Nick also talks to the issues of men being in general, less likely to successfully access HE. #EPCCongress25 #EANCongress25
Nick reiterates the financial challenges in the sector and his concerns about whether the UK will get the funding position right.
#EPCCongress25 #EANCongress25
Nick starts off talking about his own detailed knowledge of Manchester and that Professor Malcolm Press’s keynote show why is is the incoming Universities UK President.

He reminds us of our responsibilities as professors to shape the solutions. “Engineering is a high cost subject; it’s vital to the country; we need to make this clear to the government.” #EPCCongress25 #EANCongress25
If only engineers were as good at communicating as they were at solving problems ... #EANCongress25
That for instance, the GVA provided by Manchester Met (alone) is larger than both the much more visible Manchester football teams combined.
We also hear that we need to be optimistic and the impact we have on young minds if we don’t take a positive view.
#EPCCongress25 #EANCongress25
This morning, we hear from Professor Malcolm Press, VC of Manchester Met about his perspectives of the financial pressures on the sector; that the funding models of the previous decade aren’t coming back and we need to better explain the value of the sector.

Our opening keynote at #EANCongress25 kicks off to a packed room. Prof Malcolm Press, Manchester Met VC and Universities UK incoming President, spells out the challenges and opportunities for HE and engineering academics.
“I entered politics for the same reason I entered engineering: to make the world better for everyone” @chionwurah.bsky.social is delivering the annual lecture at #EANCongress25
