Ever considered being part of an academic conference as a student volunteer? I'm coordinating the SV call for #ECSCW2026 and we're looking for people.

I'd say “please apply if you're interested,” but knowing who follows me, “please forward this […]

Student Volunteers A conference like ECSCW needs many helping hands to function, and **student volunteers** are one of the roles that make a functioning conference possible. ECSCW 2026 is looking for a number of student volunteers to help the organizing committee and ensure a smooth conference for every participant. Student volunteers must be enrolled as (undergraduate or graduate – Bachelor/Master/PhD) students at the time of the conference, be at least 18 years old on June 29, 2026, and have at least conversational fluency in English. As a student volunteer, your tasks during the conference would include assisting speakers, helping and guiding participants, coordinating with the organizing committee as well as venue staff, troubleshooting tech issues, setting up rooms and materials, and generally being available as an information source for attendees. ECSCW 2026 is an in-person conference that takes place from June 29 to July 3, 2026, in Munich, Germany. Student volunteers are expected to be on-site for the duration of the conference, and to be available beforehand for regular communication via e-mail or similar channels for planning purposes. We are not able to cover costs for travel to and from Munich or accommodation during the conference, but we can help with the process of finding and securing accommodation if needed. Benefits for student volunteers include: * Attendance of the full conference, free of charge1 * We will coordinate among the team to enable student volunteers to attend as many of their desired events and sessions as possible * This also includes attendance of the conference social dinner, all other meals provided to conference attendees, and the attendee gift bag * Free attendance of the student volunteer appreciation dinner (planned for Monday) * Networking opportunities with academics from the ECSCW community throughout the week * Unlimited use of public transportation (bus, subway, tram) in Munich for the duration of the conference * One year free EUSSET student membership * Free ECSCW 2026 student volunteer t-shirt If you would like to become a student volunteer for ECSCW 2026, please contact the general chairs via e-mail to _chairs@ecscw.eusset.eu_ **by April 30, 2026** (AoE), and make sure your mail includes the following: * Your full name * Your university or other institution * Your supervisor or department chair (if applicable) * Your nationality or nationalities * The reason we have to ask this is because the pre-conference venue, UniBw Munich, is technically also a base of the German military, which has access restrictions based on concerns of national espionage. If your nationality is on a (short) list of “nations of concern,” the organizers may be unable to grant you access to campus, and therefore to the pre-conference. This would make you ineligible as a student volunteer. * We do not need a formal cover letter or CV, but feel free to add a paragraph about yourself and why you would like to be a student volunteer at ECSCW 2026. If we get more applicants than we have spots, we will make a decision based on this information. Please send the initial e-mail from your institutional e-mail address if possible. The general chairs may use the information you provide to verify your identity and affiliation. Student volunteering is particularly beneficial for students with an interest in CSCW and HCI research, but there are no requirements for prior experience or professional activity. All necessary instruction and training will be provided. The general chairs will let you know by May 7th whether you have secured a spot. * * * 1. Activity as a student volunteer cannot fulfill the requirement of having at least one author for each paper registered as a conference participant. In other words, if you are the only author of your paper who is attending the conference, you will still need to pay the registration fee for the paper to be published. Please contact the general chairs if you have questions. ↩︎

I'm co-organizing #ECSCW2026, an academic conference on how people use technology to work together. (Because I don't have enough to do yet, ha.)

One of the things I'm handling is social media, so if you do #CSCW, #HCI or related research, feel free to follow and/or share! 🙂 […]
