Your English learners encounter new language all day long — in math, science, history, and even hallway conversations. A language notebook gives them a place to capture, organize, and own their learning. How do you make a language notebook? All it takes are a notebook and colored tabs. Teach your students to divide their notebooks into sections with the tabs. Here is a suggestion for how they may divide their notebook and what to jot down in each section: 1️⃣ New Words: Students record vocabulary they're encountering across all their classes, like definitions, examples, and connections, and define them in their own words. 2️⃣ How English Works: Students note patterns, grammar rules, and sentence structures they're noticing in reading, writing, and conversation. 3️⃣ How to Say It / Write It: Students collect phrases and language they can use to express their own ideas in discussions, assignments, and everyday communication. 4️⃣ Questions: Students write down words and concepts from any class they don't yet understand, to bring to their English Language Development (ELD) instruction period for further clarification and support. Encourage translanguaging throughout — students note connections between new English vocabulary and their home language: cognates, sentence structure differences, idioms, and more. Multilingual assets belong on the page.
