This week REDUCE has met with EU leading Fishing Producer Organizations (FPO) of long line fisheries from Galicia operating in waters of the East Central Atlantic Ocean to explore collaborative work between science and fishing industry on #ETPBycatchReduction measures in this maritime area.
Today is #WorldFisheriesDay, a productive activity which plays a key role in human nutrition, jobs & healthy ecosystems, as stated by @FAOfisheries.
REDUCE researchs in ETP bycatch reduction of EU fisheries in ECAO, contributing to advance sustainable and resilient fisheries.
#ETPBycatchReduction
In the last week´s Joint Webinar, Sandra Ougier (Marine Stewardship Council) from the sister project ECO-CATCH has provided a closer insight on how the MSC scheme works and the relevance of bycatch reduction as a key criteria within the global evaluation for a given fishery. #ETPBycatchReduction
Kind reminder for our followers interested in #ETPBycatchReduction

Our second-day sessions of the #REDUCE #RegionalOnboardObserversWorkshop "Training for Marine Megafauna Bycatch Data Collection and Mitigation" are focused on bycatch of elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) and marine mammals.

The first day of the #REDUCE #RegionalOnboardObserversWorkshop "Training for Marine Megafauna Bycatch Data Collection and Mitigation" has come to an end. Participants have acquired updated knowledge on bycatch of Sea turtles and Seabirds. #bycatch #ETPmarinemegafauna #ETPBycatchReduction
We will be in Nouakchott (Mauritania) next week delivering a Workshop on “Marine Megafauna Bycatch Data Collection and Mitigation” aimed at regional onboard observers. The training will deal with, among other subjects, standardizing bycatch data collection protocols.

This is a wonderful example of reseachers and fishers collaborative work, integrating their ecological knowledge in innovative turtles bycatch mitigation measures, as we are doing in REDUCE. #bycatch #ETPBycatchReduction

Our Coordinator, Jacob García-Solís (@irbio-ub.bsky.social ) and our partner CETMAR will participate in the "Joint Cluster Event Restore & Protect Marine Biodiversity & Reducing ByCatch" to hold in Brussels at 13&14 March 2025, in the Research Executive Agency (REA)
#ETPBycatchReduction #bycatch
There are constant interactions of marine megafauna with fisheries of different scope, depending on the metier/fishing gear, the ocean area, the season, etc. Some ETP species can be caught incidentally becoming “bycatch”.
