"Death of Dog "Help".
Mr. J. Climpson, the trainer of the well-known canine collector for the Orphan Fund of the A.S.R.S., informs us that "Help" is no more, having died at Newhaven, Sussex, where he has spent his time since he has been on the retired list. This animal, some years ago, was without doubt the best known dog in the United Kingdom, and he was a welcome visitor in the homes of both the humble and the great. "Help", with his trainer, was a familiar feature of the tidal train from London Bridge to Newhaven, and on two occasions crossed the Channel. Few passengers on the London and Brighton were unacquainted with the dog and his mission. ... It is estimated that "Help" was instrumental in obtaining upwards of £1,000 for the Orphan Fund. The amount collection, of course, varied from the copper of the workman to the gold of the well to do. At the Bristol Dog Show, in 1884, "Help" was presented with a silver medal, and ten guineas were realised as a result of his visit. In the same year Mr. F.W. Hughes, of the Gresham Club, presented him with a silver collar and tablet, and he constantly met with tokens of the esteem in which he and the cause were held by the public. Though "Help" had not been on active duty for nearly two years at the time of his death, he still assisted the Orphan Fund, as several gentlemen continued their subscriptions to that fund marked, "For Dog 'Help.'" As the cause remains - and with considerably increased obligations - for which he travelled, it rests with our friends to make up for his loss by increased efforts."

We hit Peak Victorian with 'Help' the dog, shown here in 1888 with a pointing orphan

'Help' was a popular fundraiser for the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants Orphan Fund. His fame & good work meant that he was honoured with a touching obituary in 'The Railway Review' in 1891 #EYAAnimals

In 1959 The Salvation Army published Bramwell Darbyshire's book 'Woodland Citadel', which imaged a Salvation Army corps populated by animals (like the Little Grey Rabbit books). Here we find Colonel Swallow, Commissioner Bullfrog and Sly Fox- drawn by James Moss.

We love finding animals in the archives!

(With the exception of rodents, and insects like moths, silverfish and woolly bears, which can cause major damage to collections! 😱)

Here are some of our favourite animals from the archives!

An extract from an old handwritten book, a modernised version of which reads ‘…but it happened the river proved deeper than we expected it. and I kept up my horse as well as I could from standly and so bore up a long time but, when we were gone so far that I could not turn back, the river proved past riding and the bottom could not be come to by the poor mare (which was an excellent mare of my poor brother George Wandesford's). So, I saw myself in such apparent danger and begged of God to assist me and the poor beast I rid on, and to be merciful to me and deliver me out of that death for Jesus Christ…’

In summer 1644, teenaged Alice was saved from drowning in a river by her brother’s horse: ‘the poor mare drew up her fore feet and perceived she did swim ... and ... brought me over that river in safety.’ #EYAAnimals #EarlyModern 🗃️ 📜

One of our favourite animal stories we found in the archives this year is taken from the July 1972 edition of the London Log (London Hospital magazine). When a person transporting fish saw the bags had split he dashed to the London and sought assistance for the piscine-patients!

As it's #EYAAnimals day, I can't resist sharing this marvellous sketch of a very intrepid penguin. It's a doodle on WWII track chart of part of the Arctic, so the penguin was a very long way from home. [The National Archives: MR 1/1007, no 12] #ExploreYourArchive
