It’s been great to welcome students from Fitzalan High School to the Archives this afternoon. They’re studying War Horse this term, which prompted them to visit to learn more about the impact of the First World War on Cardiff #EYAInclusion

This is Charles Bolter. He was born in 1896 in Cardiff.

A handwritten survey response from Trinidad, dated 1829. One sentence reads: ‘Of native doctors we may say we have not any except old women who deal in simples.’

These 1829 surveys show how British colonial doctors in Latin America helped destroy inclusive indigenous medical practises, in which gender and wealth played no role. In Britain, only wealthy men could be doctors.

This year we have been running the Mentally Fit York funded project 'Stories of Mental Health from York: Past, Present and Future.' Working with two brilliant local artists, we have engaged target groups across York with archives from The Retreat. #EYAInclusion @exploreyourarchive.bsky.social

Advisory Committee for Multicultural Education paper on Education for Equality

In 1982 Berkshire County Council produced this paper on 'Education for Equality'. The 1976 Race Relations Act stated that local authorities had a duty to eliminate unlawful discrimination & promote equality. This examines how schools/colleges could fulfil this duty #EYAInclusion

Creating subject guides also offered us the chance to review language in our catalogue descriptions. We made sure inverted commas were used to clearly distinguish words from the source text, & replaced outdated or offensive terms in the archivist's voice with more inclusive language.

In 1974 Brasenose was one of the first 5 Colleges to admit women, and in fact we believe that we may have been the first College to vote for the change in 1967. This may have surprised the author of this poem in the Archives dated 1884 #EYAInclusion #ExploreYourArchive

She was a dance and movement education practitioner who worked with many different groups, including children, people with Parkinsons and the elderly.
