Hidden in our archives are what remains of the stories of people who were not heard in their lifetime. Our Change Minds projects explored the lives of real people in our casebooks, but there are hundreds more waiting to be re-discovered.

For #EYASilence, we thought it fitting to look back at a time in which the Gardens had to be silent. This instruction sheet, issued during the Blitz in WWII, and an air raid logbook detail how the frequency of bombing raids led to the regular suppression of daily operations. #KewLA

For today's #EYA theme #EYASilence #EYACiúnas we are thinking of some of the underrepresented voices in the historical record. This photo, titled Mr. Austin's servants, shows household servants in uniform in the early twentieth century.

In oral history recordings, silence can be as powerful as the words it punctuates. In this emotional clip, former RCP president Andrew Goddard speaks about losing his friend and colleague, Donal O’Donoghue, to #COVID.

🤫 Ever been told to be quiet in a library? Silence isn’t mandatory at Kresen Kernow, but in the 1897 Falmouth Free Library rules, it was #31—just above “dogs not admitted”! 🐶 Today’s #ExploreYourArchive theme: #EYAsilence #falmouthlibrary

The inside of the programme:

The Quiet Room. A sanctuary of rest. It gives an impression of peace and simplicity. Over the doorway are the words 'Cofia Ddysgu Byw', at night time a light shines outside in the darkness; before entering the porch the lusty shouts of school boys come from the playing fields behind; students are talking in the corridor opposite and in the garden plots. The door is opened. Silence. The Quiet Room.

In 1932 a Quiet Room was opened at Glamorgan Training College in Barry.

The purpose of the room was to provide a quiet space for contemplation and reflection, and especially to remember staff and students who had passed away.

For #EYASilence we immediately thought of Blackfen Library - pictured here in 1949 - where stern librarians inspected children’s hands for cleanliness before they could borrow books. If anyone whispered there would be a very brusque ‘SSHH!’. #ExploreYourArchive

Whilst celebrating the collections, it's important to recognise histories that are underrepresented in archives. #EYASilence is an opportunity to highlight work taking place to challenge these silences, such as Ashanti Harris's project which consulted the Scottish Theatre Archive.

Libraries are well known places of silence, more so in years gone by when Librarians would enforce the rule with an iron hand.
Here we have a couple of letters of correspondence between Bangor University’s Registrar and the Librarian at the time, Thomas Richards, regarding students releasing a dog in the library and another student setting off fireworks in the library. Both believed to be RAG week pranks.
The students received harsh punishment, being banished from the library for the rest of term and the firework culprit also receiving a hefty fine.

Through lists, accounts & correspondence, the archive can reveal the names, ages, health conditions & relatives of the enslaved people over decades. These details can be pieced together to discover the stories of individual people, & we can begin to break the silence.

The Gale & Morant Family Plantation Records provide powerful evidence of the enslavement of people of African and Caribbean descent in Jamaica.

As the papers were created by the plantation owners and managers, the voices of the enslaved people are silent.
