The USS Constitution is a 3-masted heavy frigate that was launched in 1797, serving in the Quasi-War with France, against the Barbary pirates, and, most famously, in the War of 1812 against Great Britain. In that conflict she captured five Royal Navy warships, earning her nickname "Old Ironsides" in her battle with HMS Guerriere, whose cannon balls bounced off her hull. I've often thought of her as an icon of American History, undefeated in battle, still in service today, ready to defend her namesake. Hyperbole, perhaps, but there are times when we need icons......
