A small museum on site brings it to life with finds & displays.

Taking a break from the Christmas crowds in York to look at a section of fortress wall in the museum gardens. York was founded in the AD70’s but earlier defensive ditches have been found possibly from a slightly earlier expeditionary campaign.

#HighRochester Roman Fort, Bremenium, on #DereStreet in Northumberland, linking #Eboracum & #Trimontium. Built under Agricola after the #Boudiccan revolt, it guarded the frontier. A most intriguing discovery is a round tomb.

Caeresius Augustinis, Sixth Legion veteran, buried in York with his wife and infant sons. The tomb shows the children older than they were; perhaps a dream of what could’ve been. Modern red lettering misleads; scholars pieced the true inscription back together.
