It has been almost a full cycle of Wild Talk. And we have a real *treasure* of a plant coming up in Oct! With original linocuts from the inimitable @vanessa_mckiel. @lunenburgbarnacle www.thebarnacle.ca/tag/wild-talk/

Queen Anne's Lace flower
Queen Anne's Lace flowers, white and lacy
Hairy stem of Queen Anne's Lace.
Queen Anne's Lace (Daucus carota in Apiaceae family) is the wild version of carrot. Eat root while it's young or be disappointed. The seeds can be used for birth control. Make sure the stem is hairy; a poisonous cousin has smooth stem & purple blotches. #foraging #ediblewildplants #wildplantmedicine
Just dropped a new short 🎥
Found a mulberry tree while biking through the park—sweet, wild, and growing right in the city 🍇🌳

Yucca plant in bloom, at night
Yucca flowers
Yucca filamentosa, in the agave family, is blooming! The plant has saponins, so use pounded roots for soap. Flower petals, flower stem & fruit can be eaten. Use root poultice on skin sores. Pounded/scraped leaves yield fibers for cordage. #foraging #photography #ediblewildplants #wildmedicinalplants
Red Carolina Allspice flowers
A Carolina Allspice bush with red flowers.
One of my favorite spring bushes is the native Carolina Allspice, with red flowers in spring & alien looking seed pods in the fall. Calycanthus floridus is the Latin name, in the Calycanthaceae family. You can use the bark in place of cinnamon. The flowers smell good too. #foraging #ediblewildplants
Greenbrier tips
Greenbrier tips
Greenbrier (Smilax rotundifolia in Smilacaceae family) is a thorned menace. I'm talking ripped skin, torn clothes, & liberal use of profanity. Its ONLY redeeming feature are the soft new tips. Pull off with hand, sauté in butter, & enjoy eating like a true foodie. #foraging #ediblewildplants

Made pumpernickel style crackers with sourdough discard and ground Curly dock seeds. Curly dock is an edible wild plant with seeds that can be ground and used to substitute 1/2 of flour in recipes.
Have you tried using curly dock seeds?

On beech trees here in Maryland, I often see this black spongy sooty mold called Scorias spongiosa, which grows only on the honeydew of aphids that in turn are exclusive to beech trees (Fagus grandifolia). Some research claims it's edible. #fungifriends #ediblewildplants
