Puros village receives N$8 million for solar project Puros Village in the Kunene region has received N$8 million through the Environmental Investment Fund for the development of a solar mini grid. This is part of the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy’s plan to meet the country’s target of increasing access to electricity nationally from 59.4% to 70% by the year 2030. Ministry executive director Ben Nangombe says the solar mini grid will be rolled out to other parts of the country to ensure more than 200 000 additional households, many of them in rural and peri-urban communities, are electrified. “This is a first, but it will not be the last. Because our approach is clear, we will not only be partnering with electricity distributors; we are engaging other agencies and institutions that can help move the needle forward,” says Nangombe. He was speaking during the signing ceremony of service level agreements (SLAs) with regional electricity distributors (RED) last week. Nangombe said the national grid will not be able to accommodate everyone, therefore, in some areas, solar mini grids or hybrid systems make more sense in terms of economics and sustainability. He added that the ministry is engaging with development partners to advance platforms such as Energy Compact Namibia and the Mission 300 initiative. Mission 300 aims to bring electricity to 300 million Africans by 2030. “These are long-term visions aimed at scaling access and improving delivery systems. But we are not waiting for donors to get moving. We are already moving with what we have,” said Nangombe. The ministry allocated N$135 million to different regional electricity distributors for the implementation of different projects to provide electricity to places that are still without access. The City of Windhoek received N$30 million, Erongo RED N$20 million, northern electricity distributor N$30 million, Oshakati Premier Electric N$7 million, and //Au-Ob RED N$12 million. The Central North Regional Electricity Distributor received N$20 million and an additional N$16 million for major upgrades at the Tsumkwe and Gam Solar Hybrid Stations. According to Nangombe last year, the City of Windhoek executed a similar agreement, connecting over 800 homes with a N$15-million allocation mainly in peri-urban areas. Nangombe added that more SLAs will be signed with other partners after they complete internal processes. “We will sign those SLAs in the shortest possible time. No administrative delay will be allowed to stall the implementation. The agreements we sign today will get the ball rolling, and the rest will follow swiftly,” said Nangombe. Ithete commits to rural electrification Over 1 500 households were electrified between 2020 and 2025 at a cost of N$55.6 million, while an additional 1 956 peri-urban households were connected to power during the 2024/25 financial year through a N$75.5 million investment. During the 2023/24 financial year, 678 households were electrified at a cost of N$ 19.8 million. The deputy prime minister and minister of industrialisation, mines and energy, Natangwe Ithete, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to rural electrification and the development of strategic plans that support Namibia’s national goals during the opening of the ministry’s strategic planning retreat at Swakopmund on Monday. “Through our rural electrification programme, schools, public institutions and households have also benefitted. A total of 326 public institutions and 1 074 households were electrified at a combined cost of N$308.5 million during the 2020-2025 period,” he noted. Ithete further highlighted the Baynes Hydro-Power Project as a cornerstone of Namibia’s future energy security. Developed in collaboration with the Angolan government in 2024, the project is being presented as a milestone in regional cooperation. The power station is a planned 600-megawatt hydroelectric power plant in northwest Namibia, at the border with Angola. The minister emphasised the importance of national empowerment, adding that all 12 mining licences issued over the past three years included conditions ensuring local participation. “This is aligned with our vision to increase Namibian ownership in mining. Local content development in oil, gas and green industries is vital to our country’s socio-economic development,” he stressed. According to the minister, royalty collections from the mining sector reached N$5.96 billion during the same period. He attributed this success to rigorous site inspections, permit verifications and audits. Mining ministry executive director Ben Nangombe echoed the minister’s sentiments, urging staff members to remain focused and proactive in delivering a comprehensive and responsive strategic plan. He acknowledged a series of challenges, including inequities in access to resources, inefficient project management and slow internal processes. However, he expressed confidence in the team’s ability to respond effectively. * Nampa The post Ithete commits to rural electrification appeared first on The Namibian.
