In Riverside, Metrolink trains run alongside BNSF's busiest main line, where riders and trackside residents are exposed to pollution from dozens of diesel trains a day. Electrification from Fullerton to SB could improve passenger and freight service and clean up the air for all. #ElectrifyMetrolink

Among today’s approved investments is $53 million to purchase 12 clean energy locomotives to replace older diesel engines across Southern California’s Metrolink system. Approximately $57 million will be spent to repair a section of State Route 1 near Lucia damaged by slides in last winter’s storms, and $9.5 million will help build a mobility center in Santa Maria that will serve as a hub for regional, clean-energy buses.

Environmental documents and preliminary designs for High-Speed Rail between Los Angeles and Anaheim are out. They call for electrifying two tracks owned by BNSF, proving freight railroads are no obstacle to a public agency with teeth. SoCal could chose to implement this early to #ElectrifyMetrolink

I remain convinced that the single most effective public health intervention we can achieve in the Inland Empire and esp in San Bernardino County (most polluted county in the country by ozone, high rates of asthma and lung cancer) would be to #ElectrifyMetrolink and #ElectrifyFreight.
