What you should know... Before Rosa Parks, there was Claudette Colvin. at age 15 Colvin was the first person arrested for challenging Montgomery’s bus segregation laws. 9 months before Rosa Parks One of four Black plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit against Montgomery’s bus system. They won the case, known as Browder v. Gayle, which was affirmed by the Supreme Court at the end of 1956 — paving the way not only for the end of segregation on Montgomery buses, but also on public transportation nationwide.

At 15, Colvin refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus which ignited the movement for transit justice and civil rights.
