Estamos quase lá!

An image of Berkshire hillsides, meadow, flowers. Atop it, the words of this poem: This Year Here, the kind of September morning that pauses my breath -- jeweled dew on the tall grasses and ripe corn, the hillsides beginning to take on their seasonal tweed, while over there -- famine, injustice, anguish. Despair presses down like a lead blanket. Where is hope in a year like this? I turn to Jonah, the reluctant prophet who found his conscience and his heart at the bottom of the sea. The miracle isn't that he survived inside a fish. (Look up "allegory.") The miracle is our story yelling year after year: did we notice to whom Jonah was sent? To people who wanted to kill us. Where is my hope? In God's certainty that every human being can turn. Yes, even them. I don't have to try to love everyone: that's God's job. My job is to keep my heart soft. To apologize. To thank the vine before it withers. To love what comes, and to love what goes. May you be inscribed for a good & sweet year. R. Rachel Barenblat Elul 5785 velveteenrabbi.com
