The thread of ecological genocide that is in @sathnam.bsky.social #empireworld & #richardpowers #overland breaks me. The trees have this growing importance of vital interconnectivity to me, I cannot explain it.

In the middle of #Empireland, learning a lot. Didn't realise there's a follow-up. #Empireworld is going on the list!

Sathnam Sanghera in conversation with Hannah MacInnes

Last night with @sathnam.bsky.social x Hannah MacInnes hosted by How To Academy @rgsibg.bsky.social

Great event asking us to hold contradictory challenging views: Empire can be good and bad at the same time.

Could reparation be seen as an investment in former colonies?

The whole background is a broken white.
In the middle, surrounded by all the text, a crowned lion sits on top of a globe. His posture radiates apprehension and the look on his face hints at chronic constipation.

I finally bought a copy!

I loved Empireland, so God knows what took me so long this time.

The courier seems to have stopped a few times along the way for a bit of freestyle frisbeeing but
'pristine' and 'empire' don't go together well anyway.

Very much looking forward to hearing @sathnam.bsky.social and learning more about #Empireworld in Bristol later this month.

Reading @sathnam.bsky.social #EmpireWorld: interesting note that the Malayan Emergency was so designated because insurers would not compensate for losses incurred in a “war.”

Neal Ascherson · It hurts, but it’s holy: Consequences of Empire Myopic and flattering as their take on empire history has been, the Brits never drugged themselves into supposing that...

Am grateful for this deeply intelligent response to #Empireworld from the peerless Neal Ascherson in the @LRB. He makes some great points and criticisms.

Thrilled #StolenHistory is up for a British Book Award. Children's books are team efforts, so my thanks to illustrator Jen Khatun, editor Phoebe Jascourt, star publicist Lizz Skelly. Despite the tedious culture war on empire, change is happening. #Empireworld #Empireland www.sathnam.com/empire/

Not long home from beautiful Bath after a memorable evening listening to @sathnam.bsky.social talk about #Empireworld and the importance of understanding the non-binary complexities of #imperialhistory. It was a real privilege to meet Sathnam in person. Kudos to Toppings bookshop for hosting.

Shaping the conversation about Britain’s colonial past In the days following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, a tiny array of mourners outside the British consulate in Hong Kong surreptitiously morphed into a protest movement. Over the course of a week so...

Tristram Hunt disagrees with my argument in #Empireworld (in his position, he has to), and he's wrong to say at the beginning that I don't note "Hong Kong’s display of public sorrow" (I literally do), but this still somehow feels like a generous review in the TLS

#Empireworld by @sathnam.bsky.social “…like all great literature… offers nuance…”

The vital importance of nuance in understanding & discussing the complex realities & messy legacies of British (& European) imperialism is a consistent theme.
